I know that helicopters, and their operation, are expensive but $ 60,000 is crazy. That's what happens when there's no competion and when the 'customers' seemingly don't have a choice.

I guess I'll get a new copy of the Companion and the AWOL guide to look over. I like having a paper copy in hand.

I'd rather not use an app.if possible so I prefer a paper map or guide book. We don't have a start date. That may depend on our son as much as us because he'll be looking after our house and affairs.

  • I wonder how Matt_C would react to Grandma Gatewood's gear choices. I suppose her hike wouldn't be valid.

Even though my leg isn't fully healed yet I can't help but think about our plan to hike the southern half of the A.T. in 2024. We're thinking to start either in Harper's Ferry or Washington DC and hike to Springer Mt. In the past I've always used the AT Companion to plan our section hikes and the one I have now is from 2021 so I need a new, updated guide. Are there any trail guides set up specifically for people going SOBO on the AT ?

Quote from odd man out: “You can have a bit of a conversation on the FB Group, but they are ephemeral. ” So far I've stayed away from Face Book and most other social media as I didn't want to spend the time with my face in a screen. Now that I'm retired and my time is my own I might give it a try.

It seems to me that many people are no longer interested in having a conversation. They just want to make a statement and move on. I recently read an article that said that the #1 thing that causes young people to be anxious is having to talk with people. I find that sad as I enjoy talking with people, even total strangers.

  • I wish I was an "expert" on as many things as Matt_C I wonder if he has any friends

  • Sad. How can anyone be so closed to learning through experience? Or at least that's what it sounds like to me.

I got to meet Warren Doyle at the AT Vista earlier this year. He certainly seemed opinionated,as the article suggests, but a nice guy none the less.

  • Quote from max.patch: “I like the bike pic. Were the windmills loud? ” The windmills made 2 different low frequency noises simultaneously. One was a wushing sound of the blades in the air and the other was a mechanical noise of the internal machinery . If I remember correctly a sign said the blades only turn at 16 to 18 rpm. That is then increased internally to whatever rpm the generator has to spin at. Neither noise was loud, but enough to keep me awake for awhile. It was almost like a vibratio…

  • My wife has been after me for some time to get some kind of bear can. So in preparation of our hike on the Great Allegany Passage I bought a Bear Vault BV475 and carried it. It claims to hold 5-6 days of food and it does if you squash it in. Sure takes up a lot of space in the pack and of course adds weight. I don't know if I'd use it on a long hike but am undecided as of now. A smaller one might be the way to go, we'll see.

A number of years ago I had to work on Thanksgiving. The others on that shift were much younger than me. Since none of them had an inkling of what the song Alice's Restuarant was I decided that they had to hear it. I think I'll have to play it today while we are having Thanksgiving dinner with my son and my wife's sister, and her daughter . I hope each of you have something to be thankful for.
