Quote from Astro: “Quote from Astro: “Leaving FL a day early tomorrow to get home before the snow and ice hits on Thursday and temperature eventually goes down to -1. ” Left FL at 2am my time and made it back the 1050 miles just before dark hear. Low tommorow is now up to 2*, but with Real Feel of -25*. Ran by grocery store and office tonight in case we are snow/iced in for a few days. ” That’s a long drive! Glad you made it home before the bad weather. I’ve also prepared. Packed my bag tonight …

  • My daughter took me to the Yellow Deli once. The food was good but the workers walked around like zombies, never smiling, no personality. It was bizarre and that’s when I started learning about the 12 Tribes. I’ve read their rules for child rearing and it’s barbaric. They even give the exact measurements for the tool that is used to beat babies and toddlers.

  • I understand how you feel hikeallover and it’s a valid comment but the spirit of this site is that it isn’t heavily moderated. It was created when another site took moderation too far so the administrators try to avoid being heavy-handed. The members self-moderate pretty well. We also talk about a lot of stuff that isn’t hiking related (but try to avoid politics). I personally have strong feelings against the 12 Tribes, their doctrine and practice of child abuse but their presence near the AT do…

I had to make a run to Chattanooga so met TZ for a hike at White Oak Mt. It was one of my favorite types of hikes, no plan, just meander and go where it looks interesting. We hiked up the steep Christmas Top trail, went to Points Unknown, and practiced our balancing skills on the teeter-totter bike ramp. We also discovered that the Pacific Northwest tree octopus has made its way into Tennessee!

I should have started journaling my odyssey as an adult learner on day 1, I’d have a book by now!

  • I totally understand this practice but have been on the other side, the one left at the campsite or shelter after a hiker stopped to cook their meal and in one case, accidentally spill their food in the fire ring. I thought, thanks, now I get to sleep here and deal with the wildlife, lol! Is it better to cook in a more remote location then move on to your camping spot or is the thinking that the smells/trash/attraction for wildlife is contained in one place? If that’s the case, how do you reconc…

Y’all are both right. But I was feeling sorry for myself (over it), needed to vent and wasn’t fair. He really is teaching me what I want to learn. While he does move fast, most of the difficulty is that my brain has to totally shift gears from the previous 6 years (next month). The last 6 years have been about playing tunes with an occasional technical lesson thrown in. I should not have stayed with my previous teacher for so long. She became a good friend and my loyalty is often too strong. I’m…

I wonder if there’s such a thing as a learning coach or advisor? Someone who helps others to organize and establish a plan because I’m feeling overwhelmed, unfocused, and unorganized with my new teacher. He has so much information, tries to teach me so many things, that I don’t know where to start or what to practice. During my lesson, he changes direction quickly and my brain will be trying to figure out the previous task so I can’t focus on the current one and then feel like an idiot. Ugh. Ori…

Quote from Astro: “57, which would be great if it would just stop raining. Got leaves to rake. ” Same here. I can’t stay on top of the leaf removal, it’s crazy. There’s no place to take them that doesn’t charge a lot of $ and burning them is illegal in my county so I throw them over the back fence. Last time I worked on them, I had to get two ladders, climb over the fence, and disperse them…but now the yard is covered again. I like trees but these are ridiculous. My next house won’t have this ma…

  • I agree HB. I find it ironic that careless practices create nuisance bears. The nuisance bears are relocated in an effort to protect them, but die anyway. For me (and the point of my previous post), the shame lies with the hikers/campers/park visitors who habituated the bear because now they’ve killed it.

  • GSMNP is doing a study on what happens to relocated bears. Preliminary data shows that 2/3 are dead within 4 months by various means…harvested, hit by cars, etc. Such a shame.

Quote from LIhikers: “Thanks TJ. I hope everyone can focus on the positive things in life and not the negative. For me and Kathy it would be easy to be negative as we had our dog, Tora, put to sleep the other day. But I refuse to make that the center of my day. There's more to look at and think about that is good and positive. Happy Thanksgiving everybody ! ” I’m really sorry to hear about Tora. I hope y’all are doing ok. I have 1 dog left and she’s blind and deaf. She’s started acting weird, li…

I did another section of the local-ish lakeshore trail. This time I wore blaze orange. As soon as I started hiking, there were repetitive gunshots close by and it freaked me out. It sounded like someone target practicing but I’m a stubborn fool and decided to start and see what happens. In the first mile, I hiked parallel to a road and it sounded like someone was shooting on the opposite side of the road but there were houses over there which was weird. I just kept going. Towards the end of the …

And then a trip to Japan to see my son and his new bride, won't leave much of a summer. Probably just Collegiate Loop at end of July after a week or so near NC at the beginning of July. Looking at entire Colorado Trail for 2024. But could pull in if somethings change. Probably 2023 more trips wife wants and then 2024 try BMT followed by CT. Plus, assuming you play "right handed", the fine motor skills are needed in your left hand. ” LOL. Child's play! (JK). Watch a drummer on a kit.
