My wife's only living family is her sister in Ontario. We haven't seen her in two years, about the time she was diagnosed with MS. So going for a visit ASAP not really optional. It only became possible last week. We are off tomorrow. We may or may not make it across the border. There are lots of hoops to jump through. In addition to being fully vaccinated, we have to pre register for the time and date we arrive at the border, have a negative PCR test in the last 72 hrs, and submit a quarantine p…

PostHere it is. It's a bit confusing, but there is language giving the official scorer discretion to credit the most effective relief pitcher with the win. Not sure about giving credit to a starting pitcher when a short reliever blows a save and but then "wins". baseballrulesacademy.com/offic…cher-game-inning-offense/

PostOther Voices, Other Rooms is my favorite Nanci Griffith Album. Omg where to start. Includes collaborations with Emmy Lou Harris, Iris DeMent, James Hooker, John Prine, Bob Dylan, Arlo Guthrie, Guy Clark. But the first song on the album (with Emmy Lou) is the on I sing most often when hiking. youtu.be/TyqgWYIVgQI

PostQuote from max.patch: “The Field of Dreams was a Nightmare for the closers. Both of em. Shame that one of em sucked so bad that he got a win for his efforts. ” I seem to recall that the official scorer has the discretion to assign the win to the starting pitcher in the event a closer comes in and blows a lead, only to "win" when his team scores in the bottom of the ninth. But I guess they pretty much never do it

welcome to the cafe
PostSpending the weekend at the Lodge at Pere Marquette State Park in Illinois, overlooking the Illinois River just a couple miles from it's confluence with the Mississippi at Grafton. The lodge is classic parkitecture, built of local stone and timber by the CCC in the early 1930's. Curiously empty. All of the Michigan parks are packed, although MI doesn't have any lodges in their parks. Won't have time to do much outdoor recreating. This is a family reunion trip. We will all drive up to Springfield…

Darn Tough
odd man out - - Gear
PostQuote from jimmyjam: “Mine seem to shrink instead of stretch and I'm hand washing and air drying. They get just too darn tight across the top of the foot. I've even tried stretching them by stuffing them for days. Maybe I to stuff them when they are wet???? ” how often do you wash them? I wear a pair for at least a week, maybe two before washing them. Their anti stink property is remarkable.

Darn Tough

PostDarn Tough socks are probably the most recommend socks among hikers. It's the only thing I wear (everyday, not just hiking). Sometimes I hear complaints about their fit. I have always said they need time to confirm to your foot to fit right. I now can document this. I just got a new pair of my favorites, micro crew cushion oatmeal. Compared to my old pair, you can see how much the old ones have been broken in. Note that I wear size 12 shoes which is at the upper end of the range to fit these siz…

Quote from BillyGr: “Quote from rhjanes: “I've not been in a REI in a few years. Buy most everything from UL vendors and online. It always struck me when I went in and some boy scout was in getting fitted for his "Philmont" pack. They looked like Everest climbers without the down suit. Kid weighs 160 pounds and has 55 pounds of gear. ” Probably somewhat unfortunate but usually a combination of not having the finances to buy the smallest lightest of everything and (even more so) that if those in …

I find it remarkable how backpacking gear traditions can be so entrenched. I am not sure if it is the retailers who are influencing the buyers or the other way around. I suppose it is both, like ants endlessly following each other around the rim of a cup, feeding an endless loop of misinformation. For example: The retailers will tell you that you need a large pack for a long hike and a small pack for a short hike, when experience tells me exactly the opposite is true. People out for a camping we…

PostSpeaking of Cincinnati, Fifth Third Bank is a Cincinnati-based bank known for having the dumbest name and also its own "hamburger", the famous 5/3 Burger. It was launched in 2009 for our local Single A baseball team that plays in 5/3 Ball Park (in Grand Rapids MI). It has five 1/3 lb patties (5/3 lb, get it?), five slices of cheese, a cup of chili, Fritos, salsa, sour cream, lettuce and tomatoes on a one-pound bun for just $29. You got a T-shirt if your ate the whole thing. "Nutritional" Data: 4…

PostQuote from max.patch: “Last night the Mets were at the Reds. NY Met announcer Gary Cohen gave a review of Cincinnati Skyline Chili. While Cincinnati chili is a still menu item at various local restaurants, 15-20 years ago a franchise Cincinnati Chil Restaurant opened in a suburb of Atlanta. It was probably Skyline, but I can't remember for sure. I had what is shown in the video. I went once. It didn't last long before it folded.
