Quote from IMScotty: “Just want to give a financial report and thank everyone for their generous donations. I am sorry if I do not thank you all individually, but some of you use your Hiker names on here, and when the donation comes in your real name, I am sometimes a little unsure who is who. Including a small donation from myself, the most recent donations came to $475. The yearly expenses for this site are $499.20, so I would say that is enough to keep the Cafe up and running for another year…

Quote from StalkingTortoise: “J&J put out a new release yesterday. The main point was that the single dose vaccine still offers excellent protection against severe illness, hospitalization and death, regardless of the Covid-19 virus variant. The secondary point was that testing of a booster showed that it resulted in a robust increase in antibody production. What did the national news outlets report on? The latter. For some reason, the media is trying to scare the population into thinking that e…

Quote from max.patch: “And the "reward" for hiking thru Georgia in the snow and cold rain of Jaunuary and February is hiking in New England in the middle of summer rather than fall. ” Just more evidence for why I am not obsessed with traditional/purist thru hike schedules. I've always wanted to invent the "coin flip flop thru hike". That's where you go to HF and flip a coin. Head you hike north to ME. Tails you hike south to GA. If when you look at the coin and feel disappointed in the outcome, …

BTW, Detroit did put together two really good halves. Unfortunately it was the second half of their first game and first half of their second game.

Nice. I love geographic oddities. I had not seen his one. Atlas Obscura is a good place to read about them. One of my favorites is Bir Tawil, said to be the only inhabitable place on earth that is not part of any country. Well, sort of. This assumes Bir Tawil is "inhabitable" (even though it's not inhabited) and Antarctica is uninhabitable (even though it's sort of inhabited). Bir Tawil is an 800 square mile bit of uninhabited, road-less desert on the border of Egypt and Sudan. But Egypt recogni…

Quote from Swillpcb: “Thank you so much for your thoughtful reply! I really like your idea of flip-flopping and matching the sections to the season. That was the information I am looking for. My reasons for hiking the trail this way, #1 I now have the time to make the trip the MOST enjoyable with no time constraints, #2 At 67 y/o I see no reason to punish my body the way a thru-hike would even though I’m in great physical shape and am used to spending weeks at a time hiking and canoeing. I was surprised as I've been wearing Oboz for years, with good success. I just ordered a pair of Oboz Tamaracks. I ordered Oboz again because they've always fit my feet well and I've always gotten good mileage out of each pair, except for these last ones. I'm hoping that the failure of the last pair is a one off event. Even thoug…

After four years, my little toes had poked holes out the sides of my old Saucony Peregrines, so I thought I was due for a new pair of trail runners. I thought the tread on the Peregrines were a little aggressive for everyday use (these are not just for hiking), so I went to our local shoe store and found they carried most of the top brands of running shoes. I looked at a number of reviews and surveys, and it seems that these days, the most popular and well reviewed trail runners are Altra Lone P…
