AppalachianTrailClarity.com articles for new hikers and curious veterans

PostQuote from Da Wolf: “i don't advise anyone to not filter or treat. i just never felt a need to so i never have ” I know. But Twistwrist is writing advice to people. It is her I am cautioning. No matter how much anyone knows there is always someone who disagrees or knows more. When you write advice you have to be careful you don't pontificate. No one likes a smartass know it all. It can be a fine line when writing information articles.

PostQuote from Da Wolf: “not all thru-hikers treat/filter water ” Agreed. I wouldn't bother on many occasions. I think it is important that no matter how much you think that you're in the right on any subject you not assume that you are in what you advise.

PostQuote from Rasty: “Quote from SarcasmTheElf: “Quote from Rasty: “Quote from SarcasmTheElf: “If it makes you feel better one of my easton tent stakes did break the next day. So I must be doing something wrong... ” Did the head pop off? I broke one one my trip also. ” Let me guess , they were the stock stakes from your tarptent? That's exactly what happened to me. I assumed that handy rope hole in the stake would have gone through both the head and body, no such luck.Instead I donated the stake bo…

PostIM has an AT tatt about that location. But I think his being in Perth provides an alibi. It's not cold for someone from New England.

PostAlthough I am in another country and follow a different football, I have watched "gridiron" as we call it here quite often over the last 25 years. Until my AT hike in 2013 I followed no particular team. My Pats allegiance is due to my hiking partner from Springer to Katahdin. I believe that I watch fairly clinically with no prejudices. With all that said I think that in the game against Kansas Brady was as good as it gets. His throws in that game were inch perfect. I rate him as good as Montana …

PostThey did it wrong! But damn, someone did the parenting right.

When planning to do the AT I joined Whiteblaze and lurked. I learnt pretty much everything I needed to. Then I decided to actually start chatting and getting to know a few people in the hope that I might know some people I might meet. At almost exactly the same time HB opened the cafe and the rest is history. In hindsight getting known online was the best and worst thing that I could have done. I have friends for life and feel part of an online but still real world community. But when I was doin…

PostWell I'm still saying go Pats! I was thinking it might be Peyton's last season. Wouldn't it be great for him to have his last game in front of his home crowd?

Quote from Drybones: “Quote from OzJacko: “Sad but at least we didn't lose a fashion guru. ” That wasn't very nice...don't know what made me like it. ” I know. The devil made me do it. Very sad and I hate the saying "at least he was doing what he loved". Still think we all prefer surviving what we love. Dying is something best done asleep. Looks like a fun character and sad to lose people who share their enthusiasm. But he does stand out in those photos....

Hiking & Biking
PostThe Munda Biddi shelters (at least the southern ones) are only a few years old and little used and I do not think that they have mice. My eldest son stayed in two of them (I think there are only about 10 all up) and didn't have any. There are 49 Bib shelters and I think maybe half a dozen have mice issues. None as bad as AT shelters.

Hiking & Biking
PostReservations not required. They are free like shelters on the Bib. For more info on the trail google Munda Biddi. There is a volunteer organization similar to the Bibbulmun Track Foundation that has a website with lots of info. Like the Bibbulmun it is under the responsibility of our Forestry Dept and is government funded mostly. BUT!!! January not recommended for holidays here. 1. It's school holidays and the pointy heads and their suffering parents are everywhere. 2. It's too freaking hot and …

Hiking & Biking
PostFor the bikers out there here are a couple of photos of one of the huts on our 1200km mountain bike trail the Munda Biddi that roughly follows the Bibbulmun Track. Hardly anyone uses this hut about 15 miles from my place. It has room for probably 60 people comfortably. Less than that appear to have stayed there in the last 12 months.

After weeks of hot weather and lots of bushfires through the southwest we now have rain. 23mm in last 24 hours. Expected to continue for next 3 days. Lots of lightning mixed in. Not unusual to have summer storms but 4 days of it is. Still fires around (the rain is patchy and the lightning starts more).
