Quote from Astro: “In March 2011 my then 10 year old son and hike from Neal Gap to Dick Creek Gap. Although crowded, it was very interesting. Sad seeing some having to get off due to bad blisters. All of the retired guys kept telling my son how lucky he was, and they wished their had taken them on the AT when they were 10. ” In 2011 I had my grandsons, 13 & 17 hiking with me for a week thru the rocks of PA. There were a couple guys telling them their Grandma never took them hiking. It was a wond…

  • Quote from Astro: “Quote from jimmyjam: “I've always heard that the origin came from farming. The farmer spends alot of his time outside in the sun over his crops and gets sunburned on the back of the neck. Hence the term redneck. ” That is what I learned in American History. ” I learned both versions, the farmer was probably first.

Eventually she let me buy a pony instead, I still had to milk the goats twice a day. She had a Health food store and sold the goats milk and eggs from our chickens…

  • Quote from LIhikers: “Quote from SarcasmTheElf: “Quote from LIhikers: “It's my observation that Redneck country starts in Pennsylvania. ” It starts pretty much everywhere well outside of the cities. About 1/3 of Connecticut is redneck country, so is about 3/5 of NY state by landmass. ” When I think Redneck I think southI'd never think of looking north of me, but you might be right. ” One version I have heard of the history of the term "redneck" was started as the Unions were organizing the coal …

  • Dr. Bronner's unscented baby soap ingredients: Organic Coconut oil, Organic Palm oil, Sodium Hydroxide, water, Organic Olive oil, Organic Hemp oil, Organic Jojoba oil, salt, citric acid, Tocopherol. This is the soap I use at home and on the trail, it comes as a regular bar. The skin is the largest organ in the human body, I don't want to smear chemicals on mine.

  • I love goats too, my husband is grateful!

  • Quote from ScareBear: “Quote from TrafficJam: “Regarding the use in healthcare, there are other products available that are as effective. If it proves to be unsafe, it's fine by me to pull it off the market. As someone who uses a lot of chemicals on myself and others, it's much appreciated. Another thought.. sometimes the FDA's data and info is provided by manufacturers, some of whom have a lot of influence. So although is was previously thought/"proven" to be safe, that may not necessarily be t…

Quote from WanderingStovie: “Quote from SandyofPA: “8:30AM, 34 degrees and spitting snow. Another grey day in Pittsburgh. ” Go over to Schenley park near CMU and roll some giant snowballs in the big grassy field. ” Unfortunately the snow is melted, and parking in Oakland is impossible. I will stay here in the suburbs 25 miles away and watch through the windows as I recover from my first cold in years. I do have fond memories of the park from the 2 years I lived in Squirrel Hill while going to sc…

Or is the New World actually the Old World, and everyone else abandoned North America? ” As a friend likes to say, "The New World was only new to the white man. To us, it's always been old."She's also fond of wearing a tee shirt portraying a group of armed Native Americans on horseback with the saying "Native Americans, fighting terrorism since 1492". ” I'm saying ther…

  • Quote from LIhikers: “We've never cooked on the trail. We only boil water and use it for one of the many things you can make ready with it. One Thanksgiving we had the entire feast via freezer bag cooking in Harriman State Park. One of these days I want to try and make pancakes. I'm keeping my eyes open for a small, flat pan with the edges turned up. We use a K-Mart grease pot for boiling water, I've thought maybe I'll get another one of those and cut the sides down until it's in the neighborhoo…

In Cumberland, MD the C&O connects to The Great Allegheny Passage which continues through Ohiopyle,PA (LHHT trailhead) all the way to Pittsburgh, PA. A few block walk down Grant Street in Pittsburgh will take you to the Amtrak/Greyhound station. The Capital Limited and the Pennsylvanian service Pittsburgh. Washington DC to the east, Chicago to the west. New York city via the Pennsylvanian. You could walk rails to trails for months! I just need a backpacking bicycle, for the real flat parts.
