I just mailed my resupply package to Erwin for my hike starting on 3/18. Meals from Monday lunch through Saturday breakfast Six mini bottles of Crown Royal Apple 2 containers of Mio and a small bottle of hand sanitizer Map & guidebook pages Shorts, 2 socks, 2 underwear, long and short sleeve shirts 11 pounds, 13 ounces. At least the first 25 miles from Sams Gap to Erwin will be fun with minimal clothing and food in the pack. Leaving Erwin and climbing up towards Unaka? Not so much.

  • It's good to have options. And some folks like the one-stop shopping option. Comparing the REI deal with my effort to get to Springer, I think I would have signed up. Saturday, September 27th, 2010 01:00. Fly into Atlanta and take a shuttle to the airport Sheraton. 05:30. Alarm goes off. Start the day with four hours of sleep. 06:30. Shuttle back to airport and board MARTA to the North Springs stop. 07:20. Wait for shuttle driver outside the North Springs station 07:45. Dixie Wisson drives Sox &…

The Rocks of PA continue from DWG up to the Route 23 crossing just before High Point. After Route 23 northbound, the trail mellows nicely. The Apple Pie Cafe in DWG looks to have replaced the diner that had a major fire a bunch of years back. Can't offer any comments since it's new. Horler's Store in Unionville NY (short walk from the Jersey-side of the border) had good made-to-order deli sandwiches. Hard to believe that it's been 13 years since I did the NJ section of the AT...

  • I'll add another $1000 to the reward kitty as long as I get to choose and administer the punishment once the SOB is caught. And tried & found guilty. Or not. Hell, if they catch someone who even looks like a root nailer, I'll light the torches and hand out the pitchforks.

Yeah... back when I worked a mile south of Swatara Gap, I would take my lunch up to the AT and sit on my favorite log a few tenths in from Route 72. Anytime a thru would pass by, I'd offer to take them down to the store and back. No sweat off my back, but it saved them 3 miles of road walking round trip. Good times.

Quote from LIhikers: “Hiking with the NOBO bubble is an interesting idea. It's not something I ever would have thought of. I doubt I'd like hiking/camping with a crowd as we go to the woods to get away from commotion. ” As my spring hikes get further and further south, I've had the opportunity to hike with different NOBO bubbles. Mid-March hikes in VA introduced me to the early starters. These were folks that were putting in big miles each day and left me in their dust. Last year's early April h…

I wanted to join Scouting but my Mom said no. Both my kids participated in Scouting. I was the camping coordinator for my daughter's Girl Scout troop - they couldn't do any overnight trips and none of the Moms were interested in attending the weekend training. Heck... they ended up staying in a large cabin at the Girl Scout camp. All I did was take care of the fire and pass on some outdoor survival tips during a walk around the property. For my son's Cub Scout den, I took them out on the AT in t…

  • Sox should have added "wuz here!" We started and ended section hikes in Damascus, so we walked Laurel Ave twice. Thanks again LW!

  • Excellent! Thank you! Email is *removed*

  • I was on the lookout for Lobo Solo last April but didn't get a sighting. And Bobo McFarland's was closed on Tuesday. I really missed out on getting the full Damascus experience. IMG_0002-M.jpg

  • My hiking partner Smoking Sox ordered us up a brick for the Laurel Avenue sidewalk project in Damascus. Anyone care to take a picture of our brick and e-mail it to me? Worst case, we could stop in on our next section hike to TN but it's a little out of the way and there's no guarantee we'd be passing through in the daylight. Smoking Sox & Stalking Tortoise "This order of bricks was installed in the sidewalk between 116 East Laurel Avenue and 124 East Laurel Avenue." So north of MRO near the hair…

Quote from The article sez:: “The NASA group tried a cross-linking approach, where linear polyamides were reacted with a bridging compound to form a three-dimensional covalent polymer. ” I get all tingly when reading about 3-D covalent polymers. Then again, I still remember when nylon was considered a 'space-age material'. Time to walk down to the molding machine area and breathe some more fumes...

A Dutch friend of mine just completed the North Sea Trail in the Netherlands. Based on his pictures, the total elevation gain / loss might have been in the 100 meter range. Add in beach-side cafes and tourist towns, and it didn't look like a bad place to take a long walk.

Quote from Dan76: “Don't neglect to sample Belgian beer, chocolates, and of course cheese. ” Fixified the beer statement. One of my best memories of visiting my ancestral homeland in Sneek (Friesland area) was drinking fresh Belgian biers. Grolsch does make a killer spiced winter bier... For cheese, visit Kaashandel De Brink in Deventer. 250 different varieties on sale.

Red ash is softer and has lower BTU value.

My daughter got me something that I didn't know I needed - a whiskey wedge. Silicone mold fills half the glass so you get a wedge of ice that chills the bourbon without diluting it.
