PostQuote from Rasty: “Quote from Astro: “Quote from Rasty: “MADRID (AP) -- A court in Spain's Canary Islands has sent a 27-year-old German man to prison for 3 years for causing a massive forest fire that killed one worker last summer. The man already admitted, when he was detained in July last year, that he accidentally started the blaze by burning his soiled toilet paper. Civil guard agents had found him near the source of the fire in the Atlantic Ocean island of La Palma. The blaze destroyed nea…

Quote from WanderingStovie: “Try flying into Milwaukee from Cancun in January, and walking around outside with inadequate clothing. ” Not quite that extreme but a few years back I flew from Costa Rica to Ohio in late September. Flew in shorts and sandals, arrived late at night with temps in the low 50's/upper 40's. The folks at the hotel desk looked at me like I was nuts, walking in the door. Then again when I walked out a few minutes later to get food (hadn't eaten since WAY early that day, as …

PostRight, I get what you're saying. I don't know what type of masks/respirators you wore, but SCBA for firefighting have been positive pressure since...uhh....well for a long time. There's a constant flow of air even when you're not inhaling, so even with a not perfect seal, contaminants will be kept out. Obviously the fuller/thicker/longer the beard, the less seal you'd be able to maintain.

Quote from Ewok11: “Having grown up in the Southeast, I uttered that phrase about "dry heat" more than once until I walked out of a hotel room in Lawton, Oklahoma to 105 degrees of dry heat right to the face. It was educational. ” Yep, that sums it up pretty well. While I get that having your sweat stick around and soak your clothing isn't comfortable, I'll take 98 degrees and 90% humidity over 120 in the shade and single digit humidity, because when it's 120 in the shade it's HELL in the sun, a…

PostQuote from Dan76: “Quote from Grinder: “Quote from Drybones: “I don't mind if it turns color as long as it don't turn loose. ” That's my hair motto. So far not much of it has turned color, except the beard, but I only have that on vacation. ” SCBA? ” Yep, although I think since the advent of positive pressure beards aren't as big a deal as they used to be. BUT a beard would prevent seal and not having a seal would prevent passing a fit test, and fit tests are mandatory, so the beard-free deal wi…

Jim Blue's Gear List
PostI've never once made a list (much less checked it twice) or weighed my pack. I know for a fact (and Rasty can attest) I carry too much sh*t. Nothing I haven't been able to handle though. My biggest obstacle has been my fat ass. There'll be considerably less of that come August when I get my next chance at the trail. The pack, likely still just as much excess crap. I bought light (not ultra) weight stuff (tent, sleeping bag, etc) with the intent of having some luxury stuff (Kindle, coffee grinder…
