  • I was lucky enough to meet & hike with Brice Hammock. He has Tripled Crowned TWICE! Both since he retired. About the only reason I could keep up & camp with occasionally is he had his 30 something daughter along with him. He told me in private he loved having her along, but it was agravating at their low daily miles of around 20 something miles a day in relatively easy Oregon. A few years later I ran into him at an AMLDA-West conference. I asked about his summer's hike. He said it really beat hi…

  • Quote from hikerboy: “i hate marshmallows even more than avocados ” You just can't find a good "bucket of Bacon" everywhere on the trail. You have to learn how to improvise.

Really depends on the trip. I figure most of AT is pretty safe but always have some Iodine Tablets with me or recently a Sawer Mini. I almost always have a map of the area I hike in. If I'm high on a ridge most likely safe. Low vallies where I cn't tell what is in the draineage system I think twice & maybe treat. mostly using common sense. Out west, lots of trails go through cattle country. When you watch cattle piss & crap in the only water source in 15 or more miles around the weight of a good…

Quote from TrafficJam: “My New Years' goal was to do 10 real sit ups by the end of the year. I'm up to 15, then 5 more after I rest, and another 25 with my feet under something. So I changed my goal to 40. ” That's 45 already. I think you need to reset your goals!

Quote from odd man out: “Quote from hikerboy: “i wore a cotton t shirt last weekend hiking with coach. i did ask him to keep an eye on me, just in case. ” 4 day hike starts Friday and I'm bringing my Kuhl contract pants which are 50% cotton / 50 % nylon so I guess I have a 50/50 chance of dying.Quote from Tuckahoe: “I'm not Catholic and I feel no guilt... so there is nothing to confess. ” I'm lutheran. We feel guilt for everything. ” Better wear a survival bracelet!

  • I've heard of nights with 30+ tents at Hawk mountain Shelter. A part of me would love to do another thru but BMT is looking like a better alternative down south. I really think ATC should support this.

Quote from Mountain-Mike: “Quote from Foresight: “I just want an explanation as to why 25% of Koalas have chlamydia, ” I guess cause the sheep are easier to catch & hold onto. Otherwise you would see a much higher rate. ” Sorry couldn't resist. Just came back from the west. We always tell rookies out there to be carefull of the ones with "x" spray painted on them, When they ask why, we say because they kick.

  • I admire her for her spirit & gumption. I question why she had to be rescued? Just my personal belief to know your limits, watch weather & turn back when it's getting bad. I've pushed my limits a few times, but turned back many more times. Just because I have a cell phone doesn't allow me to push myself to the point I have to call for people to rescue me & endanger their lives. Never happened to me but I have an aquaintence who lost two members of a SAR crew in the Whites. I may be preaching to …
