When I was driving down Kimsey Hwy, (a rutted road with barely enough room for two cars to pass), I had to stop to allow a small turtle cross the road. About a mile down the road, I decided to turn around and came upon that same turtle crossing the road again, headed in the opposite direction. He saw me and turned around, again. That turtle is like me and doesn’t know where he’s going.

I did my homework and studied maps yet had trouble finding the trailhead. It used to be at one end of the parking lot and indeed, we found it going in the other direction. I plan to take a tent and a hammock and have been thinking about buying a bug net for the hammock. The hammock might be cooler for sleeping but having a tent will make me feel more secure.

I spent a week at Bluegrass camp and it was amazing! I was reunited with previous friends, made a ton of new friends, and had a blast playing music. There were moments of affirmation that made me realize that, as painful as it’s been, I have made progress since starting with a new teacher.

Me: I don’t want to make your friends uncomfortable by joining your hike. Daughter: I really want you to go, I’ve never been embarrassed by you, my friend’s think you’re the coolest mom ever! Ferry ticket purchased. How can I say no to that?

I’m still on the fence but leaning towards not going…the heat.

Good points Astro. I agree that some trails would benefit from more traffic. It’s extremely frustrating to me that trail building continues on the Cumberland Trail while sections are closed due to not being maintained. Not to mention the difficulty of hiking on trails that are managed by multiple agencies.

My daughter and her friends have invited me to BP for several days on Cumberland Island, GA. The plan is to take the ferry across and hike 3-4 miles to the campground then hang out on the beach. I’m still thinking about it. They’re going in July and it will be hot. The campground has cold showers which is a plus. Has anyone been?

Interesting. The benefit of this designation seems a bit vague to me. It seems the biggest benefit is that being overseen by the USFS “might make it easier” to eliminate 15 mi of road walk/private land use. My inclination is to want the BMT to fly under the radar for as long as possible.

I rode an easy’ish 10.5 miles last week without any foot pain. It was great but I’m not where I should be for the July, C&O Canal trip so have decided to cancel. It’s a relief to not have the pressure of getting ready and to focus more on hiking.

Week before last I camped in VA with family and did some short hikes. My granddaughter’s, 2 & 4, were a lot of fun. It was the 2 yr old’s first trip. We hiked the Humpback Rocks overlook trail but turned around before reaching the top because it got too difficult for me to hold onto the 2 yr old and navigate the steep rocky trail…they did great though! I’m sorry you weren’t able to finish your hike but it still sounds great. Maybe you can plan some long sections, you have a good start.
