Still hot as hell here. Heat index 105. Low tonight 85. I'm headed to the beach next week where I'll probably hit a cold front with my luck.

The turn around point was at a bakery a couple of towns over, where we took a break. It was hard, but all I bought was a cup of coffee. I think I might join them a couple times a month. ” That’s awesome. It’s difficult for me to find a group I can hang with. Here, everyone who rides on the roads are fast(er). I’m consid…

Had to walk in the spots without shade. Visited my daughter and SIL in Lititz PA and love it! I’m thinking it would be a great place to retire except moving away from my parents would be hard. Anyway...the heat is starting to bother me and living in a colder climate sounds good right now. ” I'm thinking Canada would be good …

I started my New Hampshire hike in my Oboz Sawtooths, but after slackpacking over Mooselauke the balls of my feet hurt. I wanted to wear them for the toe bumper because of the toe protection, but when I wore them in April, I still ended up loosing three toenails. So I switched to my Altra 3.5s that I had stashed in my car in Glencliff. Guess what, I lost no toenails and those shoes pretty much have a non-existent toe bumper. Go figure.

Quote from Traffic Jam: “Today’s excellent walk was in the Smokies. The trail is a familiar one, Lead Cove trail up to the AT. 3100’ elevation gain in 4.7 miles. I saw a bear, checked out the electric fence at Spence Field shelter, and shared clementines with some young hikers from England. Fun times! ” Wow an electric fence. Could make for an interesting midnight pee.

Quote from Astro: “I had been given good advice to use the Huts (both this year and in the past), but I had a hard time convincing myself to spend the $$$. Next year I will be using them. ” At least use Lakes of the Clouds. Otherwise it's a PIA getting over Mt Washington because it's either getting a work for stay, staying in the dungeon or hiking down a side trail a mile or two to camp.

LOC does not have lights in bunk areas. Also the huts compost leftover vegetable matter which is later spread over the areas to be revegetated, which is good.

I've stayed at the small cabins North Rim, Phantom Ranch Cabin, Bright Angel, Masawick and the other GC lodges except El Tovar. We have dined in El Tovar. Phantom Ranch is way cool. Been to the South Rim 4 or 5 times, North Rim once- I really loved the remoteness and serenity of the North Rim. Definitely going back.
