Took a walk today
PostQuote from Traffic Jam: “Quote from jimmyjam: “Quote from Traffic Jam: “I planned to hike the Priest last week via Crabtree Meadows but messed up my navigation and instead, hiked Crabtree Falls…only 6 miles but lots of climbing. I really wanted the challenge of the Priest but thoroughly enjoyed the falls. Wanted to get my feet on the AT…oh well. ” So you must have parked in the little lot at the top of the falls and hiked down the falls trail? There are a couple of different ways to get to the P…

Apex vs Down?
PostQuote from odd man out: “I currently have a 40 deg hydrophobic down quilt for summer use. I need to upgrade to a three-season sleep system. I am considering a 20 deg Enlightened Equipment quilt which come in down and Apex. I am attracted to the Apex due to its low cost and performance in damp conditions. I understand the up sides of down (compressibility, weight, eg), so no need to comment on that. I specifically wonder if the temperature ratings of the two are comparable. Is it reasonable to ex…

PostI could only get away for one night, but you gotta take what you can get. I went to Hightop Mountain in the SNP for probably the umpteenth time. I like this spot because it's a got a good climb to give my legs and cardio a workout, great views, great sunsets, and usually no crowds. It's nearly always extremely windy and yesterday was no exception. I got up to the summit about 4 pm and scurried the last .5 mile down the other side to Hightop Shelter, filtered water for the night, threw up my tent…

PostQuote from Traffic Jam: “Quote from Muddywaters: “Quote from Traffic Jam: “My newest thing is that I want to learn to make homemade tortillas…mainly corn. ” ” I’m going to attempt to make flour tortillas and a corn/flour combo also. I prefer flour tortillas but like corn well enough and it has a lower glycemic index so a combo might be perfect. Of course, it’s a lot of wasted effort when I can buy better and cheaper at the store but I guess you can say that about most of the things that I like t…

Hiking & Biking
PostTook a 18 mile bike ride today in Pocahontas State Park. While there were other people there, I only crossed paths with one other biker and only around six people walking the trails. It felt like summer at 74.appalachiantrailcafe.net/index…399083e3910565519ca04d481appalachiantrailcafe.net/index…399083e3910565519ca04d481appalachiantrailcafe.net/index…399083e3910565519ca04d481appalachiantrailcafe.net/index…399083e3910565519ca04d481

Yesterday we took a ride up to Shenandoah National Park to check out the colors. Best I've seen up there in years. My phone pictures don't do it justice as the colors were popping.appalachiantrailcafe.net/index…399083e3910565519ca04d481appalachiantrailcafe.net/index…399083e3910565519ca04d481appalachiantrailcafe.net/index…399083e3910565519ca04d481appalachiantrailcafe.net/index…399083e3910565519ca04d481appalachiantrailcafe.net/index…399083e3910565519ca04d481appalachiantrailcafe.net/index…399083e39…

Cohos Trail
PostThat Coho trail sounds very interesting!!!

They had sponsors and rich parents who shuttled them around and flew them from trail to trail so they could hike different parts of each one in the best season. They also did a fair amount of slack packing, but still an accomplishment.

PostI get a hot spot on that same spot. I've learned that as soon as it starts, I stop and clean my feet and duct tape the balls of my feet and the side of my big toe because it gets sore too. Never had a blister using the duct tape.
