Are the walls getting any easier? You get a chance to try a mini version yet? You're slowly making me think about those things again...

  • I missed the Svea stoves. The coleman white gas were the go to stove of my day. As you say- there are collectors out there to sell it- but you can buy them new for $100 or so- how much we really talking here? As you say- a burns any fuel stove comes in handy, if shit got real bad you could burn anything you could find. On the other hand if shit got bad enough you burn through 10 gallons of white gas either you're feeding the neighborhood or it's time to start a campfire. Sounds like a keepsake w…

I'm working with some manufacturers to make some gear for me (for sale commercially) but that's a year or so away more than likely- in the meantime been thinking of testing suppliers out and learning the process with something simple like a skirt or quilt. Skirts are cheap enough to give out, quilts are $50-100 just for material so have to be at cost if I did a run of those. Probably going to get going with that once I get a re-fi, tax returns, and some other financial stuff in order. Not quite …

  • Quote from max.patch: “i read on fb this morning about a couple who just aborted their thru hike. the only details they gave was that 1) they concluded that a thru hike just wasn't for them, and 2) they got off before woody gap (mile 20). everytime i read someone like this i wonder if the outcome would have been different if they had waited til mid-april or so. crappy and cold weather makes everything seem worse than it is.” Agree- Seems like the number one reason people quit. Not to mention you…

It's one thing taking a shit in the winter, it's another thing standing there making cream sauce for shit on a shingle. That sorta thing gets you arrested at best, and frostbit at worst. You people are immature.

  • Kevin- In the winter around here- digging a hole makes a bigger and more unsightly mess. I usually use a snow smear- walk around the back side of a tree, do your deed right on the snow. Let it set up for a sec while you wash up with your snowball. Then scoop up your leavings by reaching a few inches under and picking up your snow cone and it's tootsie roll center. Smash said snow cone tootsie roll first onto the bark of the tree, use your shoe to smear it in. It'll degrade plenty fast with the U…

I ran a Trek Bike shop for a few years in Orlando, and Ti spokes ain't cheap brother... They might have some broken Stainless ones laying around they would give you tho... My bud owns a High-End mobile bike service there, I could prob get you them for cost plus shipping...[/quote] I thought the problem with the TI spokes was if they bent you were out of luck and had to be replaced outright? Never got into em myself- but the deal part was the bent ones that were still long enough to make stove pa…

Been awhile, but I didn't pay a dime to camp anywhere in the whites. Is it that much worse or are people just babies? I agree with the "no camping above treeline" because of the vegitation, but not fer the AMC. Other than that rule, I had no problems stealthing my way through. Although I did spend four days at ZF hut trying to hook up with a gal on the cru.

Never liked the stands either, but you gotta try everything once... Few folks on BPL reported getting cheap or free TI spokes at local bike shops if you got a decent one in the area. Not that I've heard of a wick wearing out, it's a heavy item and worth working around IMO. Either way, keep up the good work fella!

Quote from WiseOldOwl: “Quote from Rasty: “I just published two articles from Just Bill.” Uh how good are they?” They suck. Or they don't. Not sure so figured I'd open it up to the court of public opinion. Wife, friends, and family of different ages and backgrounds seem to like em- but those are untrustworthy sources at best. So take a read if you have time and let me know. No need to be gentlemanly in your responses.

  • I'd say start at Springer- too early to start at the other end and if you plan on section hiking best to hike from far away and walk towards home. That way if you want to sneak out for a week you aren't going so far from home. You could possibly do springer to harpers, leaving your remaining stretches of the trail within a day's ride from your house. While springer and big k are hard to get to, the middle 3/4 of the trail are pretty easy to reach via public transport and hitching or paying for a…

BB- A wire coat hanger or 4 thicknesses of heavy aluminum foil will form a pot stand or combo pot stand windscreen easily enough for someone of your resources. A few pole barn nails or even 16d sinkers may do it too for your little guy there. Looks good- can't remember who did the video but a guy was using a wooden block with a notch to make the walls of the capillary stove based if you aren't already using a jig of some sort.

There are two problems: 1-You are asking health questions from people who have no ability or right to answer them. 2-You are asking people if you should hike. 1-talk to your doctor, have a stress test done and get the thumbs up. You clearly have health issues, but will you actually drop dead on the trail? If so, you should probably find a safe way under medical supervision to get your health repaired enough to avoid that. The trail is pretty sweet, maybe even worth dying for, but that advise sho…
