  • Well usually there's always a push-back on new entrants to a profession or sport so thanks. If I die of cold I die of cold. If I die of boredom and fear of the outdoor weather I die of boredom and fear of the outdoor weather. I have done plenty of long hikes and could do this one with preparations, which is what I was doing. Unfortunately I was unable to know my availability for December in advance so I found myself considering it at the last minute. Most likely now it will be next winter. After…

  • Quote from LIhikers: “Are you talking about a Maine winter or a Florida winter ? Do you expect to use it in snow and single digit temperatures? Do you want a free standing tent or are you OK with maybe not being able to get tent stakes into frozen ground ? How often do you expect to use the tent ? Will the tent be for car camping or backpacking? What's your experience level with winter camping? If you are anywhere near the NY area know that there's a group of us that go out together usually arou…

  • It's just for myself. I am trying to find something not too expensive but also durable and practical. I would like lightweight but I don't want a lightweight piece of junk. There's "recommended" $800 winter 1 person tents. Alternatively I am considering this one here. Anyone ever used it? It says "okay for warm winter use." Is this to say it's a hyped up summer tent or are they just putting that there as a disclaimer to communicate it's not going to be warm without sleeping bags? Any tent can be…

  • These tents seem to be a very simple set up so I’m thinking about getting one. Does anyone know how good they are for winter? stansport.com/scout-backpack-tent-forest-713-84-b/

  • Quote from max.patch: “I would never support the Twelve Tribes cult no matter how good their food was or how hungry I was. Having said that, the members of Donald Trump's cult are much more dangerous to the future of this country. ” He he he. Except that such a proposition is a continuation of the practice of calling almost everything we don’t like or understand a cult — something that is an insult to the few who actually suffer the effects of having been a victim of a cult. 46.8% of the United …

Guess it's official. California is 1/3 the price for gear than New Hampshire. Or, are there retailers I do not know about in NH?

  • Yes perhaps there's no easy way to moderate it but it seems the poster is likely a member who posted not actually to talk about the AT, but to use the AT as a way to attract people to their group. They have no interest in this community other than to take people from it for their purposes. Did you see what happened in Australia with them? Malnourished women giving birth to stillborns who were secretly buried and then an elder who after leaving and going public died in a suspicious fire?

  • This has got to be from a member of the group. "Jobs for after you are done hiking the trail." Meaning: they hope you will join the cult. Posts like this should be taken down. Fine people can worship as they please. But this forum is for the trail hiking community and its intent is to promote that, not for members who post here hoping they can divert people from their hike to join a religious group. A Case of the James, Mishmash & potroast.

Yes it seems we have it not so good with rental prices on the east coast. For example before posting this I looked as some of the places members here have posted and found that they would charge $45-60 for a set of mountaineering crampons. On the west coast there's sagetosummit.com and thefifthseason.com, where one can rent for 3 days at $28-30? Is this really the case that expensive California has good deals and we have prices where you are almost buying the stuff if you want a 3 day rental?

Planning to do a 3 day hike up Mt Washington this month. (Stay in cabin night before and after summit). For items I don't always need like heavy duty crampons, ice axe, mountaineering boots (I have good hiking boots for summer and then Sorels that don't work with the heavy crampons) climbing helmet, gaiters, I find that IME's price for 3 days is about 75% or more of what I could buy all the stuff for new/used on Ebay. Is there another rental outlet or a swap that takes donations? Thanks

  • Thinking about hiking Mount Washington later this month. Wish there were a way to stay at the top instead of needing to immediately turn around. For time planning, is it ever safe to bring a small sled and sled down the trails? I have heard of people skiing.
