The Baxter Area - Maine
LIhikers - - AT Specific
PostAnother option for photography, and fishing, would be Katadyn Woods and Waters National Monument. It's a park not a far drove from Baxter. It has the International Appalachian Trail running through as well as other trails, water courses and places to camp. It has a web site with more info.

LIhikers - - AT Specific
PostWelcome to the cafe. Since the AT runs through Baxter park for about 10 miles your plan should be easy to accomplish. Start at the ranger station at Katadyn (spelling?) Stream Campground and hike the trail southbound. Go as far as you like then turn around and hike back, things always look different going in the other direction. Above all, enjoy yourself !

Quote from rhjanes: “Quote from LIhikers: “........ then the front moved and it's 68 degrees at 7:30 PM. Winter coats weather here! ” now that's funny, but I know it's true. Years ago I went to Tx, in the DFW area, for some training for my job. One morning I was standing outside the building waiting for starting time, I think I was in a Polo shirt and maybe a windbreaker with temps in the 50s. Employees were coming in with parkas, gloves, hats and scarfs. I asked someone if I missed a forecast f…

Hiking & Biking
PostYesterday I finished converting an old (from the 1980s) touring bike from drop handle bars to upright bars. Today I took it out for a short ride, what a nice change. Most of the parts came from Velo Orange, handlebars, brake levers, bar end shifters, rubber bar grips, and cables. It was an easy job with nice results. Next will be a refurbishment of an old tandem we have.

Hiking & Biking
PostI got in a nice ride today of 16.67 miles. It was a little chilly, but not too bad. Traffic seemed light for a Saturday which was nice. Even manage a coffee break at a Dunkin Donuts, coffee is always a plus.

Hiking & Biking
PostI had to put my mechanic skills to work to get our hybrid bike (that my wife usually rides) working correctly. First the chain needed to be replaced as it was worn too much. Once that was done the chain would skip when hard pressure was applied to the pedals. That's a sign that the cassette ( or freewheel) is worn and needs to be replaced. With that done the bike is working just fine now.

Took a walk today
PostIt was a beautiful day here on Long Island and Kathy and I didn't have anything we needed to do so we spent the afternoon going for a walk. We walked a trail that's not well known so we didn't see any other hikers or cyclists. We didn't work hard plus took a few breaks along the way, to relax. All in all we covered 7.8 miles in about 3.5 hours, including breaks.

Hiking & Biking
PostYou probably already have most of the clothing you'd want for winter riding. A couple of layers on top, under a jacket to break the wind. Long underwear on the bottom, possibly under shorts if a second layer is needed on your legs. A warm pair of socks, gloves, and a hat, headband, or buff depending on the temp. If you ride with a helmet make sure the hat fits underneath. Most of what I wear in winter is clothing I already had for hiking. Booties that fit over your shoes are helpful to keep your…
