Fools Crow. Historical fiction about the Pikuni band of the Blackfoot tribe in the 1870s. When a writer can replicate in English the dialog of the tribe at that time, it puts you right in the middle of that culture in that period. The language slows you down. You notice everything. You see why they loved the mountains so much, like we do. Makes your heart expand.

I always wonder whether I ought to start bringing a saw. My first trail maintenance crews were on the AT, where there were lots of roots, rocks, encro…

Traffic Jam - Did you find a trail maintenance project to join this year? I volunteered with the Konnarock Crew in 2011 and 2012 on moderate level projects. These were great, fun experiences, but definitely hard labor in 80+ degree heat! Crew leaders and volunteers were a varied group, a pre-med student, college students, retired vets, retired engineers, social workers, university staff. In 2011 we worked on widening the trail along Round Bald to Jane Bald, near Carvers Gap on the Tennessee/NC b…

Quote from Rasty: “Quote from escapee: “Thanks Rafe, Sarcasm, JimmyJam, Rasty, for the gear lists. Will compare them with mine soon. My pack is a Kelty trekker external frame to have the shoulder straps off my shoulders. But it's about 4 lbs though. It's comfortable until I bend down to pick something up or tie a shoelace, then it's unwieldly. Is there a lightweight pack that has the same off-the-shoulders feature? I've asked REI and we tried different packs and the external frame was the best. …
