SPRING!

PostHappy Vernal Equinox everyone! Is anyone balancing eggs or similar silliness? I celebrate by kicking off the spring clean-athon.

This isn't an AT trip. I probably won't see my first section of the AT until September. Taking my daughter section hiking tomorrow on her first hike longer than 5 miles. We are planning to go about 11 miles in the Allegheny National Forest from Amsler Springs, along Salmon Creek, and north to Cougar Bob's Tavern in Ketlletville for celebratory burgers and shake. Rain or Shine. (looks like rain) I'm very nervous about this trip because I can not begin to stress how important it is that she feels …

Introduce Yourself
PostQuote from Astro: “So based upon your trail name” Thank you. for the advice. I've actually just learned (from this forum) that Trail Names are another one of those "things" I didn't know was a 'thing'. I don't actually have a trail name. still I do appreciate your seasoned friend's lesson. "just walking". I've decided to learn more about the ways to backpack the right way because for the first time in my nearly 30 years of "just walking" I will be just walking with my daughter. I suddenly feel v…

Quote from TrafficJam: “That's a shame. I wear 7 1/2.” me too! I've never worn boots but I received a (I'm assuming) nice pair for Christmas. I've always hiked in cheap Wal-mart sneakers. Dance Skin brand. If the boots thing doesn't work out I'll probably go back to my 10 dollar kicks and put these up for grabs. georgiaboot.com/georgia/womens…ight-work-boot/G6043.html

PostQuote from TrafficJam: “Quote from JamieWalks: “Quote from TrafficJam: “BTW Jamie, are you related to anyone in Knoxville?” Not that I'm aware of.” i know some Caves from Cleveland, that's why I asked. That would have been a weird coincidence.” Ah, Cave is my married name. I have no idea where my husband's family lives. He isn't really in touch with his "kin". I think his father's name is Greg(ory) Cave but I'm not 100%

PostQuote from max.patch: “ jamie, have you hiked all/much of the buckeye trail? everytime i'm in ohio i make a trip to hocking hills state park and hike for the day. am i correct in that a large part of the buckeye trail is still road walks?” Yes, In sections and not always in order. I've hiked most all of the loop but I did't notice the cut off section that dipped into Washington county. I'll miss the blue blazes but now we have the white ones and my daughter is old enough to join some of the fun.…

Introduce Yourself
PostMy name is Jamie Cave, and I'll be the forum member asking all the N00B questions. I've very recently moved from my stomping grounds in Ohio where I have meandered my whole life and very likely been down every footpath and trail, to Pennsylvania. Now I have all these new places to meander including the North Country National Scenic Trail and a section of the AT. I'm quite excited! To be honest I was very unaware that backpacking is such an involved hobby (a way of life for some) with it's own li…

Walking The Nile
PostOoooh. I thought this was a term for a backpacking "thing" I haven't learned about yet. I'm learning a lot of "things" from this forum. I don't have any cool patches. -_- I guess there is one for completing the Buckeye Trail but I wasn't aware of it until a year later. I missed out on being able to display a tiny reminder of how I have a lot of free time but not enough money to leave the state haha!
