Wildlife attacks
roadrunner - - General
PostThere's a myth that mama black bears will protect their cubs, by viscously attacking humans, but they are not exactly the greatest protectors, probably because black bear cubs are hardwired to run up a tree when there's any hint of threat. I actually had this happen to me in SNP a few years ago, when I walked up on a bear and her cubs and was between the mama and her cub and the cub immediately ran up the closest tree and the mother ran up another tree she was near. Here's an organization that t…

PostAfter all the garden work I did yesterday, I'm taking a bike ride today to recuperate. Took a look at the weather report and noticed the winds are suppose to be from the south all day, so I'm going to ride south and have a headwind all the way down towards St. Augustine. However, if the wind doesn't change too much, that means I'll have a tailwind on the way back...Going to test tempt fate with the Murphy's Law thing....again

Quote from StalkingTortoise: “Quote from max.patch: “Quote from roadrunner: “And I'll only get the J&J vaccine -- one and done ” Don't be so sure about that -- Pfizer and Moderna are already testing a 3rd "booster shot." And if that proves to be necessary then I'm sure J&J will have to do the same. ” Don't be so sure about a J&J booster shot either. And just to be clear, J&J's 2-shot trial is a completely different trial that was conceived early on. There were actually three vaccine candidates b…

I finally identified another "weed" in my yard. I've never really paid much attention to this plant, because it is only here for a few months during the winter/fall and there's no noticeable flower (extremely small flower) and it's usually seen growing against things. However, I noticed that the Red Admiral butterfly seemed very much attracted to it, so I started searching for its identity. It's a Florida Pellitory (Parietaria floridana); it's in the same family as the Stinging Nettle and it's a…

PostLiving in Florida, I don't have to worry about hills too much, except for all the bridges, which there are many; however, I've ridden in the mountains so much that they don't bother me -- it's funny how many I see walking their bikes up them Living near the ocean, it's the wind that gets me and it's always a headwind (at least 98% of the time). That's because crosswinds are a headwind for all practical purposes, until they reach sufficient strength (for me some where above 20-mph wind), at which…

Quote from max.patch: “According to CDC recommendations, it's not exactly life as it used to be after getting vaccinated. ” I don't think it matters what the CDC recommendations are, since many people ignored them during the holidays, including many politicians that got caught with their "pants" down (remember Newsom and others...). Once people get the vaccine I believe they'll just return to normal life, especially the politicians...they gotta get caught up in campaign donations with all their …

Quote from odd man out: “In winter Robins will congregate around open water. You can buy dried meal worms at the bird seed store. They like those. Place them on a tray on the ground. They are ground feeders. We have mostly finches (house and gold), cardinals, doves, woodpeckers (downy, hairy, red bellied), sparrows ( can't I'd), chickadees, nuthatch, junco at our feeders. ” Meal worms, that's what I was trying to think of...I've never bought them, but I've heard this before, for the birds that l…

PostI found two of the caterpillars on some milkweed in very early January. On 26 Jan, one walked off and the other climbed on a tomato cage and formed into the J-shape on the morning of 26 Jan and by the late afternoon it had formed into a chrysalis. I brought him into the house a couple days later, because of some freeze warnings and taped him to a cabinet above the kitchen sink. Yesterday, I noticed that the chrysalis was very black and I could see a wing inside the translucent chrysalis. I was t…

Quote from CoachLou: “Quote from roadrunner: “Some seriously cold weather, but luckily we're not getting any of it here in Jacksonville, Fl.; it's all about the Jet Stream, I've come to realize, as long as it doesn't dip down here our weather is just fine. If it does dip down here, it's always associated with a bitter cold northwest wind. I've started seeing robins showing up here, which means that the worst of the winter is over... for this area; we'll see if that holds true for this year. I've…

I have looked into this subject, based on an experience I had once, but not sure what that was... I'm the type of person that has to see something for myself, but I do hold a very open mind towards this bigfoot phenomenon. However, I totally understand why many totally discount the possibility....the worst enemy of the bigfoot community is the bigfoot community itself. There are a lot of quacks and crazy people that make some incredible claims with absolutely no proof. If your only introduction …

And In Other News
PostQuote from jimmyjam: “I'd really like to keep politics out of the Cafe. I know it's tough in these times. I'd like everyone to be able to remain friends here for our common bond of liking to hike. Politics and religion tend to polarize people. ” Discussing P&R is a good test on one's relationship(s). It kind of reminds me of all the "friends" I saw thru-hiking together...I can't tell you of how many life-long "friendships" were destroyed on the AT; including those that had plans of marriage

For the real deal on covid, including the vaccine, I go to this guy, who is a doctor and not prone to hyperbole, such as you find in the media. He specifically addresses the issue of safety with the vaccine and is interviewing a Dr Offit, who has been involved with production of vaccines in the past and is on an advisory board for the covid vaccine. It's slightly less than an hour long, although I know a lot of Americans have issues with maintaining their attention span for that long youtube.com…
