PostQuote from max.patch: “Strolling down the trail with a day pack containing a half dozen Little Debbie's and a liter of water as you make your way to a gap where a car/van awaits with all your other gear is not a thru hike. I do not recognize this "record". This individual has NEVER done what thousands of other thru hikers have done -- put on a backpack and hike from one terminus to the other. ” To his credit, he did help pioneer the idea of hikers becoming useless internet blowhards.

PostQuote from hikerboy: “There is no way the average thru hiker hikes 17 miles a day. ” Asking random people their average mpd is a lot like asking people how much they can bench press: Only people who want to brag about it will respond an give you their higher than average answer. Same reason that the average pack in trail is about 25% heavier than the "average" pack weight posted online.

PostFunny side note to today's question. Apparently we have no idea what the tribe we claim to get the name "Appalachian" from was actually called. IIRC the account I read, the name only survived in a single document written in Spanish and was most likely provided by a different tribe long after the actual "Appalachian" tribe had died out. Being a translation of another dated translation and it's entirely likely is sounds bears little resemblance to the name the original would have called themselves…

Quote from LIhikers: “I just read that there places declaring a state of emergency because of the eclipse...really people, what's up with that ? ” It makes perfect sense if you think about it, there are small out-of-the-way towns that are about to be inundated with more tourists in the towns but actual residents. Their roads, infrastructure, and stores simply aren't prepared for that kind of influx.

PostQuote from rhjanes: “I missed it. Don't think I've seen it either. I looked at my AT Guide but must have misread it as I came up with "Northern Shenandoah", so picked HF/WV. I then looked at Pen Mar Park and the current AT Guide shows it at mile 1067 on a NOBO. ” Same here. My first thought was "How old is that sign that it's 137 miles off?!"

Quote from odd man out: “An update: A scaley reptile just posted: ...While it is not exactly clear that it is official policy, please do not continue to suggest ways to "get around it" that are really just breaking the rules... Since I am the one most proficient at posting ways to "to get around" the rule, should I post my last good idea to get around the rule as a way to finally get permanent "secret double probation" from TOS? ” Hehe, I saw that. Funny enough, I've never really butted heads wi…
