Alcohol Stoves

PostHere is the easiest, lightest, fastest and cheapest way I could figure to get a sub 5 min boil with 15 ml of alcohol. Stove 5 grams, wind screen 19 grams including safety pins. I made the stove and wind screen in less than half an hour. Only tools were a pair of scissors a ruler a fine point sharpie and a small nail. I took a large aluminum cooking pan I bought at dollar store for $1 Cut a strip of aluminum from the bottom that is 1.75" longer than the diameter of my pot and the same width as th…

PostQuote from odd man out: “so far I have been cooking in my pot. That is if you call putting dehydrated food in two cups of water, boiling it, and letting it set in a pot cozy "cooking". I could do that in a freezer bag I feel that being able to boil the food for a minute before putting it in the cozy gives more options than what I could use with FBC. Of course I haven't tested that theory so I could be wrong about that, so for now, ignorance is bliss. I agree that being able to boil water once fo…

Alcohol Stoves

PostIt was for 2 cups with no wind screen as it was on a cutting board on my kitchen table. I used the pot stand from the top of my bushbuddy which gave about 1" clearance from the top of the stoves to the bottom of the pot. It appeared they both were slightly under pressurized because of the leaking around the top edges from being rolled in too loose. The jets were barely evident. They bloomed quickly but the flame shape was more of an inverted cone than defined jets. With practice I could probably…

PostYou can buy lots of dried foods at a fraction of the cost of Mountain house or Packit from the Mormon church. Mormons keep a year supply of food on hand. Most major cities have an lds store or you can order online. Usually cases of #10 cans but you can split them up with hiking buddies. store.lds.org/webapp/wcs/store…345616706370_-1_Y_image_0 Best source of protein I have found is Beverly Ultra 40 freeze dried liver pills. No prep no taste just swallow. 500 2 gram pills is about 1000 grams of pr…

PostLast night i built a chs e but folded the edge over instead of using jb weld then I build an e frevo. They both leaked around the folded down lip, bloomed real quick but took almost 8 min to boil. Made them both with 5.5 oz cans. These both seem to take experience to build. I pulled out a traditional beer bottle stove with the inverted cone I built a couple years ago and it boiled 32 oz in a 1 l evenew pasta pot in just under 8 min and used about an oz and a half of alcohol. I built that one rig…

Here is my customized cuben circuit that I was lucky enough to get before they quit building them. I had a custom lid made that I use for first aid kit and quick grab things on the trail and when I am traveling it holds an iPad, boarding passes, maps etc. I have tried lots of off the shelf packs and the Mariposa and feel now that I have the perfect pack for me.appalachiantrailcafe.net/index.php/Attachment/4771/

Introduce Yourself
PostHi, all. I live near Greenville, SC and like to section hike anywhere between Springer and Grayson Highlands. Seems we end up in the Roan area a lot. Four season backpacker, I don't mind hot or cold hiking. I almost always hammock camp because it is just more comfortable to sleep in and if the weather gets really bad it is easier to sit up and read in a hammock than in a tent. Spent a month backpacking Europe with a rail pass and staying in hostels acting about 30 years younger than I am last ye…

PostAs a coffee holic I usually boil a little over a liter in the am. I have been using a canister or an Element wood stove. Which alcohol stove would have enough capacity to heat that much water without refilling it?
