Hiking & Biking
PostQuote from TrafficJam: “Quote from moose717: “I finally got back on my bike a few weeks ago and I'm doing about 12 miles at a time several days a week. I'm glad I found this thread ... what a great way to get some hiking miles in by "shuttling" myself!!” thats great! I remember you saying you had a new bike and didn't know how to change gears.” I finally just went out and played around with the gears. Some of the members of the women's hiking group I belong to told me to keep the left in 2nd gea…

I'm horrible with trees and flowers. I've gotten mountain laurel down & rhododendron. I know a beech tree ... it's similar to what we used to carve in as kids (before I knew better). I can pick out Sassafras because of the "3" leaves and thought I knew poison ivy. My dh was cutting a HUGE poison ivy vine down and I told him ... "you're full of sh*t ... if that's poison ivy, I'll eat it." Well, he broke out with the rash a day later ... I've just come out of hiding :).

It can't be this weekend - Elf and I are planning a trip to the Catskills for some no-blazing. (Trying for 4 trail-less 3500-footers.) I'm not sure which pond you're talking about... I don't know a Turtle Pond in Harriman. Of the ones I know we passed, Island Pond doesn't allow swimming, but Silvermine Lake and Tiorati both do. [/quote] Island Pond it is. You mean we can't swim when there's no life guards on duty? Darn

So when are we getting together for another hike?? I actually went back to finish where we bailed in January (?) or was it February (?). I did a loop from Bear Mtn. down the Suffern/Bear Mtn trail (killer) to the West Mountain Shelter and back up the AT to Bear Mtn. I loved hiking with all you guys. We should do something when it's not quite so cold. I would love to swim at that Pond we passed. Turtle Pond??

Haven't been around for a while, but congrats Elf ... parenthood makes your life complete ... until they hit their teenage years. If we could push 'em back in between 15 until they go off to college, that would be awesome ... oh wait ... you're having a boy ... easy peasy. Seriously, enjoy it all, it goes way too fast. My youngest just moved out and it's just my dh & me. We have to figure out how to live together again! It's been fun

Hi TJ ... thanks. I put the word "buff" in quotes because when you buy a real buff, there isn't a seam. My buffs are basically a rectangular piece of merino with a center seam. I guess it's about 24" long and folded it's about 12" wide. I'm at work so I don't have the exact size. I'll post a few pictures some day :). The heavy weight merino base layer I made is great! I used them on our Harriman trip and they worked fantastic -- toasty warm.

Where do you shop.
PostI know this thread is a little "old," but I've been off the site for almost a month!! Too busy at work & home -- trying to finish my sewing room so I can get a bunch of projects done. Anyway, I do a lot of my shopping on Ebay & Amazon and by google search. I buy Merino wool fabric from a store in NZ and make my own base layers, "buffs" & I'm going to try a few t'shirts out of a merino/polypropylene blend I bought from them. I buy silnylon from Outdoorworld fabrics and I've purchased a quilt kit …

Took a walk today
PostI took a hike today with my son down in the pinelands. Was supposed to be a 12 mile hike, but the trail was flooded about 8" for as far as I could see. So we hiked on some sandy fire roads and checked out the village ... Batsto Village in Hammonton. It was a beautiful day for a hike, but not a swim.

Quote from hikerboy: “Quote from WiseOldOwl: “Quote from Rasty: “I just published two articles from Just Bill.” Uh how good are they?” why not read them and find out?” I read the speed hike one ... I liked it a lot! I love the Native American tidbits ... good job! I'll read the lying one after my hike tomorrow.
