    there actually was new growth sprouting a bit further up the trail, with dogwoods blooming among it.

    Pitch pines need fire. Their life cycle depends on it. A lot of their cones don't even release seeds unless there's a fire. Next spring, you'll see an astonishing display of early-succession understory plants. And the pines will sprout new branches.
