Back in 1997, (plus/minus a year - don't recall for sure) our family took an epic cross country camping trip. On June 13 we departed a quaint "mom and pop" motel on n Red Lodge MT, drove over the Beartooth Pass (still buried under feet of snow), through…

One of the greatest books on mountaineering I've ever read was "The Mountains of my Life", by Walter Bonatti. Bonatti was to the climbing world then what Alex Honnold is to climbing today, mastering solo routes in the Alps of Europe.
He was also part of the first Italian expedition to climb K2, second only to Everest in height, and much a much tougher climb.
It was a controversial expedition and Bonatti was a controversial figure.

K2:The Italian Mountain is streaming free on Amazon Prime and imdb.

    I highly recommend it.

After the Gathering, I joined Bill Cooke (cookerhiker) to hike a few days in the grayson highlands. We camped at Hickory Creek campground. Monday we hiked up Wilson Creek. The next day we drove to Massie Gap and hiked up to Thomas Knob shelter and back.

Just finished this book last evening. A sobering story of two hikers who attempt to complete the classic Franconia Ridge Traverse in February - up Falling Waters Trail, across the Franconia Ridge to Mount Lafayette, and down the Greenleaf / Old Bridle Path Trails.

The author is a risk management expert and offers commentary on how one poor decision can lead to a cascade of poor decisions. As others turned around upon reaching the summit of Little Haystack, these two hikers decided to continue towards Mount Lafayette. Once a severe storm hit the ridge... PooFan

When SAR was deployed, they had to cover every contingency and sent groups up Liberty Springs Trail, Falling Waters Trail, Old Bridle Path Trail and Skookumchuck Trail as well as a team that went into the Pemi Basin from the south. If you don't learn anything about risk management, you will certainly gain an appreciation for the various SAR teams that operate in the Whites. Not to mention to New Hampshire Air National Guard.

On February 27th, 28th and 29th I did a two night out and back trip from Wolf Pit Road trail-head to Table Rock mountain and back. In typical cafe fashion I planned this trip while driving 80 mph east on I-40 heading back from the Smokies. I stopped at a McDonald's to borrow some free Wifi to get a picture of a the trails and away I went. Going up Wolf Pit road in my 2002 Honda Accord was risky with the amount of ice and snow on the road. The final hill going down to the…
  • Great Smoky Mountain National Park

On February 25th and 26th I did a nice loop in the Smokies from Big Creek Ranger Station parking lot to Deep Gap along the AT south of Mt. Cammerer fire tower. There was about 6 to 8 inches of snow while going up. I stealth camped due to the amount of snow coming in and the next day went down the Big Creek trail. Overnight there was another 6 to 8 inches of snow and freezing fog.
