    • Moonshine... Yea over 100 proof - appears in a very small quantity for backpacking... Wonderful stuff, I have only run into a few over the years and have imbibed on two occasions south of Mason Dixon.

      1. let it soak wet wood - you will still get fire
      2. works as a lubricant
      3. boil water with it.
      4. medicinal - clears wounds

don't need more than a travel Scope Bottle.

      Does anyone else carry?

Thanks for weighing in... I tried hard to not mention drinking the stuff. You wake up in the afternoon. As I said I only tried it once or twice on the trail. This was more for the alcohol stove, you can water it down and add MIO.

    • I have a co-worker that had a cousin die from it. He went blind first. Apparenty the mash cooked too long and made a lot of methanol.

It still should have come out first in the forecut I think. You have to be drinking a lot of Methanol for that to happen. Ethanol is a treatment for methanol poisioning, and they usually come together in tainted shine. The body has 20x the affinity for ethanol as methanol.

Dont know if it was somthing the dude bought, or ignorantly made himself. I suspect the latter.

A lot of shine is made from pure sugar because its simple and cheap.

You would be surprised how little Methanol causes blindness. Sorry to hear about your co-workers cousin.

    • Turns out after doing some further reading there is little difference between White Lightening and Vodka other than taste at the 80 proof point. Recently though I found a Vodka at the state store that is 7x distilled to remove more methanol & Fusel Oil and is so clear at 80% that you can have a hang over the next morning on just a little bit... A single shot will hit fast and furious.

I will never try this again....[IMG:http://cigars-wine-liquor.com/store/product_images/n/048/Platinum_7x_Vodka__90901_zoom.jpg]
This is nothing more than ultra distilled Nickolai made in The Sazerac Company a privately held alcoholic beverages company with headquarters in Metairie, Louisiana. It is the largest distilling company in the United States. Its distilleries include the Barton Brands distillery, the Buffalo Trace Distillery, the former Glenmore Distillery, and the A. Smith Bowman Distillery.

At the other end of the spectrum at 80 proof and full of Fusel Oil is a cheap (Bankers) or fake Polish vodka and if you have allergies one can break out in Hives I won't reveal the name until I look it up again but cheap vodkas are slow at first than hit you like a ton of bricks. In short stick to known brands or beware of a hospital trip. Which explains a lot about what happens in soviet held areas.

    • Some of the gamer/science fiction conventkons I have gone to... some of those folks drink Everclear. Ur, no. I have a bit of vodka or rum once in a long while, but those folks drank it like they were fish swimming through water. I like remembering and not falling down.

The liquor/package store I last went to sold moonshine in mason jars. Bottle said it was 80 or 90 proof. I forget exactly what it said because I'm not interested.

that don't count...liquor store moonshine isn't made using car radiators.:)

Well, it does mean the lead poisoning doesn't happen. They still have to watch out for things falling into the vat.

I tihnk its Spike tv channel that shows legal moonshiners. One guy was shown going through the approval process. He compained about all the paperwork, etc. The policeman walking him through it said something about 'well, now that you are legal, you have to do all this, its part of it.'. Evidently they had encountered each other at the guy's still when he wasn't legal.

Everclear is so bad it was banned in PA for all the college overdose deaths here. Its been back for a few years. Here is what you are talking about in Mason Jars. I tried Cherry - not bad...

    • I've tried a few that are sold in liquor stores. One made & markeded by a frien ( Michael Ballad from Full Throttle Saloon) & the other marketed by his former girlfriend Jasmine Cain. Both are ok, but nothing like some real stuff other friends have gotten for me. About the best was from a freinfd from NC tht toured with us for a year. Just stuff he made for family(mostly ;-)) Recipe 4 generations old. As smoth as any 80 proof store bought if not more so. I think it may have had a lot of lead in it that went right to my but. It made it very hard to get up & walk right & even stay standing. :)
    • 80 proof is more than enough for me.

I read years ago accounts of the US in the southwest Pacific Islands... how the doctor would hand out combat ration booze that had to be cut with grapefruit juice so it wouldn't evaporate before it touched the tongues of the drinkers. I really don't want to know what that was...

One of the torpedomen on the ship offered to teach me how to make 'torpedo juice'. I tirned him down... not going to drink anything made from the workings of a torpedo. Nope, not me. He didnt talk to me for weeks. He got busted around a month later after having drunk some of what it was he made. He was uh incoherent for a few days, and found himself in lockup aboard ship when he came out of it. Bye bye. Other than that, he was okay.

    • I remember the first time I tried some after moving to the smoke filled hollows. It went down so smooth.... I finished off a bunch and stood up. Then I grab my phone and sat back down. I called my wife and said I won't be home for a while ....... It was a while before I got off that lazy boy too.....
    • Okay, another story...

The ship I was sttoned on went over to Europe, stopped in Brest, France. The U-Boat pens are still there, France uses them for their Navy.

One of the guys came back from liberty and says he found a nice shop in a department store, with real eclairs !

So we go over. I buy two eclairs and a soda. About 2 dollars total. The other guys buy some to.

They had orange soda, lime soda, grape soda, and a sort of cola soda. All French, nothing like Coka Cola.

I only drank one, went to stand up... nothing happened. We had been at sea for 2 weeks. Evidently, our bodies couldn't handle the sudden alcohol in our bodies.

One guy had 7 of those grape sodas... we practically had to carry him back to the ship.

We talked the cashier out of one of the bottle caps, took it back to the ship and handed to the one guy who was fluent in French. After he stopped laughing he told us the cap said 27 percent alcohol by volume.

The drinks were in 10 ounce, aproximately, Dr. Pepper looking bottles. The grape juice had no alcohol taste to it. It tasted almost exactly like Welches grape juice. But it had a kick !

      Wow 52 proof soda!
    • I am starting suspect this is what is driving sales of Soda Stream and Mio flavors

UH this is one of three that is allowed at the PA states stores - we cannot purchase alcohol at other locations except 1or 2 ACME markets, I choose it, tried it as they serve this at a nearby restaurant. Wouldn't buy it.

    • Yeah, some states have their own alkyhol stores, you have to buy it there.

Texas, county laws. Some counties are dry, some counties are wet. Some wet counties have dry towns. Some wet towns, you can only buy beer. Other wet towns you have to go to a package store to get booze, but they don't sell beer. You have to go to a supermarket for that.

I was in Virginia long years ago. You couldn't see the bottles. You could ask for a pint of rum, but had to know the brand. The Virginia civil servant would go back and check. Then they woudl either com back up to the cash register with it, or say they were out. If there happened to be a different size bottle of the same brand, they wouldn't tell you.

Just spirits and possibly wines banned.
      Beer permitted.
I got a shock (although not as disappointed as IM) in a nearby county when we had a (beautiful) steak meal and it was a totally dry county. IM looked ready to leave and walk to the next county.

KY has some really messsed up counties. While I worked for EZR a favorite stop was Corbin , KY a "Damp" county. Restaraunts could serve alcohol except on Sundays. But...no off site sales allowed in the county. This one defies logic to me. You can drive to a place to drink, but can't buy it to bring home & drink??? ?(
    • They probably don't have an off-site sales license. I think that is what it is called. They can sell booze in their location, but they cannot sell it for you to take home.

When the casinos started building on the Mississippi coast, there was 'concern' they would be selling booze on Sunday. Turns out they did. All kinds of nonsense rumors started, but casnios said you couldn't take it outdoors or home. So the rumors of drunks passing out outside the building didn't come true.

    • Had some moonshine at the son's wedding this week end...also Maker's Mark, Evan Williams, 101 Wild Turkey, Jack Daniels, Blue Moon... these I remember. I stopped drinking anything when the kids were at home growing up, now, the only time I over indulge is with the kids...they're a bad influence on me...but man do I have fun.

I've met people over the years who don't realize Prohibition is over. Some pretend it isn't over. No idea why.
Well it isn't really over. There is two hundred years of making shine in the mountains and handed down thru the generations some of the best recipe's around. Then came Govt Prohibition creating the black market that persists to this day. Even after December 1933 State & Federal continue to regulate dry counties and limited access to alcohol in very unusual ways. Here in PA one had to walk up to a window in the 1960's at a state store and you had to know what you wanted and they would get it for you. Today its hard to buy hard cider or premium wine at a state store. There still is a black market among the rich, for fine french wine in PA. You may have noticed ATF and ABC agents roaming the southern coutryside for moonshiners.

      Here is a taste,,,,,,,,,,,,,
      George Washington
Washington sold whiskey (made near Mount Vernon), but he probably rarely, if ever, drank it. The formula was about 60% rye, 3% corn and a very meager amount of malted barley. As for his favorite drink — he loved dark porter (laced with molasses) that was made in Philadelphia.
      John Adams
Adams loved alcohol, starting almost every morning with a hard cider. Then porter beer, rum and copious amounts of Madeira.
      Thomas Jefferson
Jefferson’s huge wine purchases helped bring him to the brink of financial ruin.

    • The only moonshine I have had is Tzuica, which is a homemade Romanian brandy made from plums. My Romanian friend brings it home from Romania in water bottles in her checked luggage. When I visited Romania, out in the country I saw that every home has grape vines for making wine and a plum tree for making tzuica. I was told each village has a still that people share for the distillation process. I didn't get the impression this was illegal. To be moonshine does it have to be illegal or is enough to be homemade?
