One of my wish list trips is a cross country train trip -- from Williamsburg, to DC, Chicago, Glacier National Park, Seattle, Portland, Sacramento, back to Chicago, DC and then home. Love the fact I live one block from the Williamsburg train station.LIhikers wrote:
A number of years back I needed to go to California from New York. I'd always wanted to do a cross country train trip and made that the opportunity. While it cost just as much as flying the travel time was 3 days. I have to say, it was very enjoyable even though we didn't get a sleeping cabin, we just slept in our seats. And those seats were quite comfortable and reclined way back with a foot rest that came up. It was quite comfortable actually. I guess to go to the UK you could always go by ship. I have no idea what it would cost in either time or money, but it's an alternative.

There are plenty of legitimate reasons to hate flying, but I can't stand those people who get get through security with no problems, make their connections, don't lose their bags, and then then whine incessantly because they didn't have enough leg room, the flight attendant didn't smile enough, there was a dirty napkin on the floor of the plane, the TSA guard made me follow the rules, I had to pay 5$ for a lousy snack, there was a lot of traffic at rush hour, the baby on the seat next to me cried non-stop for 15 minutes, I couldn't fit my giant suitcase in the overhead bin, the entertainment system wasn't working so I couldn't see the TV shows I wanted to see, yada yada. A bunch of entitled wimps.
I'm getting a new pack. It's not going anywhere near my shooting gear.TrafficJam wrote:

So this week I've learned that Trinity College Dublin, provides accommodations during the summer --
tcd.ie/visitors/
Now that's pretty cool...Of course I talk to myself... sometimes I need expert advice. -

So I've gone and done it... Started making my various reservations.
Got three nights at YHA Ironbridge-Coalport in a private single room for £54
It was a late 18th century china factory, now hostel, cafe and museum.
And the Lighthorseman Pub for two nights in York.

I spent a couple of days in York a while back. It's a very historic town. The York Minster is amazing. Try to go to a service when the choir is singing. They have interesting sites from every period in history - Roman, Viking, Middle Ages, etc... You could go trekking in the Yorkshire Dales. We rented a car and drove through the Dales on the way to Scotland. Driving on the left was easy. The roads were so narrow you drive on the left and right at the same time. You just hope you don't have to pass someone. Not doing Trinity College in Ireland? Too bad. That is also very nice. Irish roads are also narrow. Our tour bus mirror was broken off in Dublin, and I had to pull branches out of the side mirror of our rental car from driving the narrow roads between the hedgerows.

Well, at the moment I feel like bashing my head against a wall.
Predictably, after yesterday's terror attacks in Belgium, there is now a flurry of people sh**ting themselves out of fear and questioning whether iit is safe to travel to Europe. All the while they are oblivious to the seemingly innocuous everyday things that will really kill them.

I've astounded Europeans online when I state 1) I've never owned a gun, 2) only first a .22 single shot rifle at Scout Camp, 3) fired an M-1 Garand Rifle at Navy Boot camp, about 18 rounds. Carried a .45 Cal pistol on watch aboard ship, and that was it.--

If I had a trip booked, I'd go.
I refuse to live my life in fear. Sure I consider the "what ifs" but if every concern had me change my life then I'd have to give up almost everything, including hiking. And that's not gonna happen. I take what precautions I can and then deal with life as it happens. -
There are over 30,000 deaths by auto accidents in the US each year. This summer I will be in Europe for 10 days. Getting on the plane and traveling by train will make much safer over that period of time as it will get me out of the death trap known as my car.
