to get serious for a moment, i dont backpack in the winter and i learned long ago that if my first trip in the spring is 4-5 days or longer then i get painful abraisions on my hips. so i carry cat litter in my backpack (rather than taking my day pack) when doing day hikes as spring approaches to get my hips toughened up.2,000 miler -

nope. i havent hiked since january. i usually try for an overnight or two before my long trips, but my last day hike, my knee ws still alittle sore from bruising it in maine in december.
im not too concerned. im in excellent shape, and the first day of the bmt is primarily downhill to toccoa bridge, and this year im traveling even lighter, plus ive got my resupply down to 3 day carries.. the trail gets you into shape.its all good -

So I gave my four weeks notice today and it was received well. I was wished a safe hike and they told me I would be welcome to come back when I was done. I have been fortunate in that I really like what I do and I have worked with a really great bunch of people, definitely a top notch company. It's good to know that they'll have me back.

Spring Break in early April, I'm going on a 4-5 night hike of the BMT starting and ending in Blueridge. Any tips for the BMT? I know very little about it.www.appalachiantrailclarity.com - Life on the A.T.

blue ridge is 4 miles from the trail head . if youre going out and back to blue ridge , i would go north.south of blue ridge theres a coupla road walks, one for about 4 miles that are pretty sucky, so nobo and back would work.
and like tj says, get sgt rocks guide.
and maps. definitely map and compass. its quite different than the at and north of blue ridge you'll be going through wilderness areas where you wont see a blaze for many miles.
on the other hand, if you go south you wont be as remote, might be a better choice.its all good -

We're thinking of heading to the Mohawk Trail in Connecticut, but we're not sure yet.
Anybody have any hints or tips for that trail???
If you look through my photos on TOS, I have a map of the mohawk/A.T. Loop with the locations of the mohawk camp sites penciled in. The sites on the mohawk need to be reserved in advance, it's free but is done by mail so it takes a little while.
I'm just up doing a night feeding rught now, but I can probably find some more info later when I'm more awake and have more brain power.Dogs are excellent judges of character, this fact goes a long way toward explaining why some people don't like being around them. -

DB I will be hiking nobo from Harper's Ferry.
Harper's is where I ended my last hike, looking forward to starting back, I should quit work as well and join you, when you leaving?I may grow old but I'll never grow up. -
The ATCs Flipflop kickoff is 5/2 with a send off breakfast 5/3. See their web site for more info. I'll actually be starting south of there around 4/26 or 4/27 and arriving in HF on the 5/2. There are an officially 42 of us registered to start nobo from HF on 5/3.
Come on and walk with us."Dazed and Confused"

Are there any pretty views or sights to see on the NOBO section of the BMT from Blue Ridge?

the stretch itself is scenic with many stream crossings , not too many views until you get to hemp top and big frogits all good -
Friends of mine have a cabin in McCaysville which is only about 4-5 miles from where the BMT intersects State Hwy 5. That is likely where we'll set out. This map makes it look like Big Frog and Little Frog aren't too far away.

From what I've read, those are pretty scenic areas, aren't they?www.appalachiantrailclarity.com - Life on the A.T.

I found your map, let me ask a question.
Do you know how long the whole loop is Using the Mohawk and AT to start and finish from the same place. -

I had hoped to find our old planning info from the 2013 meetup, but I can't locate it. Either the thread isn't there or maybe we planned the whole thing using the Cafe thread?Dogs are excellent judges of character, this fact goes a long way toward explaining why some people don't like being around them. -
