yep. hmm, did you bid on it too?

Based upon what others have posted I believe excessive moderation (delayed approval of post) , and then eventually quit bothering to post and then even visit.

Chief, do you have plans for Trailplace should you win the bid or are you just trying to keep it alive.
Unless the current "owner" can be contacted, you/we will lose all posts there. Even if you get the web site, you don't have the decade of data that was there. Sad. Saw this happen at several other sites also.

Looked like one of the bids was automatic. It just immediately bid a few bucks over the just-placed bid.

On the demise. Wasn't it also that Wingfoot (owner) ruffled a lot of people over the years? Then, he had some family issues and totally bowed out of the forum, sold/turned it over to someone else. But by then, a lot of people had "wandered off".

i'm not bidding on a website, i'm bidding on a domain name. if i were to make use of the name i surely don't want the posts of a failed forum.

no real plans. the domain has been around for 20 years. must be worth something, right? or maybe not.
can you not think of a better trail type name and just open your own site?

bidder 6 and a new guy, bidder 7, want this thing. bid is up to $105. bidder 6 has set automatic bids; wonder what he set as his maximum. and i bet bidder number 3 is biding his time, planning to snipe a bid at the last second.
from what i understand if there is a bid within the last 5 minutes of the auction they extend the auction another 5 minutes and so on. if that's true, sniping is not so effective. personally i'm happy to wait and see. gives me time to consider my ultimate bid, whenever or if that happens.

i'm kinda surprised there is no speculation here about winning price. makes me think there may be one or more bidders in our midst besides me.

Not me, I don't know enough about computers or hiking to have a web site about hiking.

      not me either.

as far as price; how much is the domain name of a failed website that was ignored by its last owner for years and has -- at most -- maybe a dozen members that checked in periodically worth? beats me, but i'd say at $105 its already overpriced.

but i'd be the first to say i could be wrong. maybe the new owner will slap a coat of paint on the place, put in new kitchen cabinets, and pull up the carpet and install plastic wood floors and flip the joint for a huge profit. see it all the time on tv. :)

not a good analogy, trailplace.com no longer points to a website. there's nothing to flip. as to the value of trailplace.com, i'd say it has everything to do with it's longevity, it's original owner and his past success. let's not forget some people actually liked wingnut and there's no doubt he ran a very successful site. i wonder how many people first learned about the AT and thru-hiking on trailplace. of course you're right, the last owner sucked and so did his forum. that's why i say the new domain owner will be better off without that baggage.
