Wow Ewok, 5,000 miles in one shot?! Did you have to get the Uhaul's oil changed part way through the drive?
No, but we did have to have it checked out somewhere in Missouri (Columbia, I think) because the oil light came on the day after the radiator overheating light came on. Added coolant twice during the trip and the guy in Missouri basically did a combination with the key and something to make the light go away and told us it was nothing to worry about. Sure guy, not like we have to drive all the way to Alaska or anything.
Probably the best part was before our journey started and someone looked at my husband like he was stupid and said in a very slow, serious, voice "You know you can't actually drive to Alaska, right?". The person sincerely believed you could not get there by road. She did not come right out and say it but it was leading up to a declaration about Alaska being an island.
So, has anyone ever done any hiking out/up here? I guess I will be starting some threads in the Other Trails category, eventually.“Only those who will risk going too far can possibly find out how far one can go.” - T. S. Eliot -

Alaska has an area more than twice that of Texas. And no, Alaska is not an island, and is not southwest of Texas. The map is very misleading. It is a wonder we learn anything useful in school.I am human and I need to be loved - just like everybody else does -
I had an ECG this morning. After lying down for five minutes, my resting heart rate was 53 beats per minute. That was too slow. I was told I was too relaxed. I had to wiggle my fingers and toes to get my heart rate above 55. I managed to get my heart rate up to 56. Can anyone here relate to this?I am human and I need to be loved - just like everybody else does

I'm the opposite. I got tachacardia and have to take meds to keep mine down from 100 at rest... -

ALL Australian states have a shore line.

My resting heart rate usually is between 55 and 60. Not unusual for an athletic person."Dazed and Confused"

We have big hearts.
I guess I would rather have athlete's heart than athlete's foot. A quote from Wikipedia:
Athlete's heart is common in athletes who routinely exercise more than an hour a day, and occurs primarily in endurance athletes, though it can occasionally arise in heavy weight trainers.I am human and I need to be loved - just like everybody else does -

I've done two that way with lying down in between runs. They timed my heart going up and coming down.
I've also done one that had a little bit of that stuff combined with all kinds of dexterity stuff in it. Walk on heels, walk on toes, arms out to side, front, palms up, down etc. All kinds of stuff. Way more than a sobriety test.Changes Daily→ ♪♫♪♫♪♫♪♫ ♪♫♪♫♪♫ ← Don't blame me. It's That Lonesome Guitar. -
I was driving the interstate in Pennsylvania at night with snow. Around a bend, a deer was in my lane. That was a cardiac stress test.

When I hike, I try to keep my heart rate low and maintain a steady exertion level. When walking uphill, I try to take longer and less frequent strides. To avoid loss of traction, I try to walk uphill smoothly, not pushing too much with my toes. I walk faster on level ground, and fastest on a gentle down grade.
I see a lot of people attack hills, trying to keep a steady cadence, and then take a break at or near the top. I would rather slow down for most of the hill, speed up near the top, and not take a break.
What do y'all do?I am human and I need to be loved - just like everybody else does -
On really steep uphills I do the "miners walk" that I learned at the grand canyon. It is short steps and slow enough that I can talk without being out of breath. Slow and steady wins the race."Dazed and Confused"

I try to rest-step and keep the cadence low, but a lot of the time I get winded anyway. I don't consciously shorten stride, but my pace count over distance says I do. I guess I need to get out more. I never seem to manage to get into hiking shape. Sometimes I think that if I had the time to hike as much as I'd like, it would be a race between getting into shape to do it and destroying my body in the process.
My wife never manages to get the heart rate high enough on the treadmill. With her, they go directly for the dobutamine.
Nobody''s ever recommended a stress test for me. My doc takes my BP, reads my labs, and says, 'see you next year.'I'm not lost. I know where I am. I'm right here. -

My husband was having one of those done in conjunction with a flight physical just a few months ago. His resting heart rate wouldn't even make it up to 50 with wiggling the fingers and toes. They made him get up and do some jumping jacks or something. He's annoyingly fit.“Only those who will risk going too far can possibly find out how far one can go.” - T. S. Eliot -

There are islands in Alaska. The Aleutian Islands. My Dad was stationed on Adak during WWII. He used to sing a song that went something like:
A is for (something that starts with A)
D is for (something that starts with D)
A is for (something else that starts with A)
K is for (something that starts with K)
Put them all together, they spell Adak, it's just a suburb of the USA.
My sister knows what all the somethings are. She sang the song during the time that Dad was in the hospital this summer. She's younger than me so her recall is better. -
