So after 23 straight wins in Jeopardy, Mattes Roach loses by $1 after missing the Final Jeopardy question. The question was about the Atlanta airport that anyone who lives here should know.
The winning contestant was from Atlanta.
I got the FJ response. The Coca Cola hint gave it away as Atlanta. I still have my Jeopardy Pen from the time I interviewed to be on the show. -

It's a tough marathon route with lots of steep hills.
We need more organizations like Baxter State Park - rules are rules.Trudgin' along the AT since 2003. Completed Sections: Springer Mountain to Clingmans Dome and Max Patch NC to Gorham NH

The race director should not have allowed it and now there’s a lot of back peddling going on.

I think they are good parents in sum total. The kids seem wonderful from everything I have seen.
It is wrong to pressure a six year old to run a marathon. Real harm can be done. But, the harm done by letting kids sit on a couch all day without any challenges or stimulation is IMHO even greater.“Of all sad words of tongue or pen,

Do you and Pepe still hike together HB?
I know he is a fun guy, but I don't think I would make as many miles if I hiked with Pepe.
But then again, I suppose 'Smiles >> Miles.'“Of all sad words of tongue or pen,

After reading the FHT thread I had a flashback to taking pictures with a crappy 110 camera, waiting weeks until you took 24 shots, paying to get them developed, and then liking maybe a handful of the pictures. And now in the middle of the woods we take a picture and immediately share it to the world.
And one of the early debates on TOS was (seriously) film or digital.2,000 miler -

OK, so I googled (just got back from AZ so my mail is still at the PO) to see why in the world SI would do this.
And I came across this cover she did when she was 63.
I'm not gonna google any more.
I don't want to know.

WOW!
For our northern friends -- Stratton Mtn is one of the locations this year.
Hike the mountain.
Ride the gondala down.
Repeat until you've climbed 29,029 feet -- the equivalent of Mt Everest (17 trips at Stratton for 22.4 miles).
36 hours to do so.
Already sold out. But wait list available.
$4,500 but that includes food and lodging so totally worth it.
If I tried this I'd be a statistic.

Why not hike up and and back down the 17 trips? Then claim you've hike up and down the equivalent of Everest. Except no one just "Hikes up Everest". Lots of altitude acclimation..... You could do it once a day for 17 days.Pirating – Corporate Takeover without the paperwork

So what is the biggest climb you can do, that is the greatest elevation gain over a short distance (from the bottom to the top of a mountain)? The biggest I know of is going east from the Hunza river to the summit of Rakaposhi in Pakistan. There you climb 20,000 vertical feet over just 11 miles. Or your could climb the north side. Here the elevation is slightly less (19,000 ft), but climb is shorter (only 8 miles). I think it's the only place you can just drive up to the bottom of a mountain 20,000 feet above you. There's a whole cluster of tourist shops at along the highway at this point. There's even a zip line ride. (seen from Google Street View)

It wouldn't surprise me if some of us have climbed 29000 feet over the years. 500 feet here, a 1000 there, and it all adds up. What's the difference if you do it in 36 hours, days, months, or years. Well there is a difference, but so what, hiking doesn't have any rules.

Reference from REI:
How many times would a thru-hiker climb up Mt. Everest while hiking the AT?
16
The number of times an AT thru-hiker would climb up Mount Everest. Compared to trails in higher elevation mountain ranges, many falsely assume the AT to be relatively flat. In fact, over the course of the Appalachian Trail’s 2,189 miles, thru-hikers gain and lose over 464,464 ft., or more than 89 miles.2,000 miler -

i used caltopo to plot my grand canyon hike. It came in at 46 mile and 10,000 fett of elevation loss and gain over 5 days.
