I went to REI today as I had to return some winter boots I had ordered through the web site.
I managed to get out without spending too much money.
The only thing I bought was a couple pair of thick, heavy Smartwool socks to use during our trip to northern MN in January
The place was crowded but not so much that it was uncomfortable.

I NEED SOME ADVICE
I've recently retired my old flip phone and moved my phone number to a smart phone.
I'm wondering what's the best way to carry and protect the phone while it's in my pack either for a day hike or longer, overnight hikes.
For those of you with experience, are there precautions that you take to prevent damage to the phone? -

I always have a plastic bag (buy from AWOL) in my pack for when it rains. Stays dry, although I did miss a picture of a humongous bear in VA due to that.
My only hiking mishap to date was in VT when I leaned over to get water (Lost Pond?) and fell in. Had to go into Rutland for a new one and lost what I thought were some pretty good pictures from Baker's Peak just after a storm late in the afternoon (since not synched with the cloud yet). The road to glory cannot be followed with much baggage.

The biggest tip I can give is that I always place the phone so that the back of it if facing out and the screen if facing towards me and protected. The one time I forgot to do this was earlier this year coming down katahdin and within minutes I ended up with a shattered screen after the ground went out from under me and the glass phone screen broke my fall.Dogs are excellent judges of character, this fact goes a long way toward explaining why some people don't like being around them. -

i used to watch this show when it on, and this guy had the easiest questions that i can remember. i thot the questions thru $125,000 were all easy. the $250,000 question i had narrowed down to 2 answers - so i would have had a 50% chance of guessing correctly (would have used a lifeline or two here). I didn't "know" the $500,000 question, but my educated "guess" was correct. the million dollar question was incredibly easy.
jump ahead to 12:45 for questions $250,000 and above if you don't have time for the easy ones.
edit to add: while i knew the answer, i think the $125,000 question would have been a 50-50 choice for a lot of people.

We always watched WWTBAM. Always been a trivia nut. Out "team" is in the top ten for our region's Team Trivia tournament, which is pretty good since our team (We Are Groot) is usually just me. If you are ever in West Michigan on a Tuesday night, you can be one of the Groots.

Here we have an odd man, out in front of the partially reconstructed ruins of the Library at Ephesus, in Turkey. After Alexandria and Pergamum, this was considered the greatest library of antiquity. For thousands of years, these storehouses of knowledge were the cornerstones of civilization, culture, economy, and power. Wise rulers knew that those who had the knowledge controlled the world and invested their fortunes in information technology. But, the 21st century will go down as a watershed moment in history as being the first time that billions of people all over the world had continuous access to much of the world's information via a supercomputer in their pocket, and yet these people used it to decide if Grover dropped an F-bomb, whether an audio file said "yanni" or "laurel", argue over the color of a dress image, watch cat videos, and discuss hiking.

And for the record, I can grow a beard. If I don't shave for a month, it looks like I haven't washed.

if ya got netflix then:
i recommend you watch the "bird box" starring sandra bullock.
i recommend you do not participate in the latest fad --the "bird box challenge" which involves blindfolding yourself and completing tasks.
(Boy and Girl in the netflix tweet are the names of bullocks children.)

speaking of which, i finally bit the bullet (pun intended) and got all my sore, crumbling teeth removed and have myself a shiny new set of dentures. i should say they are cheap temporary dentures until my mouth heals and the real expensive ones are made. to make this relevant i hear they make sonic cleaner rigs for dentures. yeah! my dentist told me to beware of a whole slew of problems for new denture wearers. okay 24 hours into it, i love it.
pardon me for bragging, but it's been a long time since i haven't had pain emanating from my teeth. -
Mark Vanderwouw, a certified arborist at Shady Lane Expert Tree Care in Newmarket, Ontario, told us at the time the inhaling and exhaling is an optical illusion that has nothing to do with actual 'breathing' and everything to do with the weather.
"During a rain and windstorm event the ground becomes saturated, 'loosening' the soil's cohesion with the roots as the wind is blowing on a tree's crown," he said.
"The wind is trying to 'push' the trees over, and as the force is transferred to the roots, the ground begins to 'heave'. If the winds were strong enough and lasted long enough more roots would start to break and eventually some of the trees would topple."2,000 miler
