What would I search under to find this trip; Its in Nc, or Va, on the coast side of the state and its a river you paddle. About every 8 miles or so there is a shelter set up, with some of them over the water. I read about this trip 10 years ago in Outsider I think...

We have an earlier model of these sit on top self bailing ocean kayaks: feelfreeus.com/kayaks/recreational-kayaks/gemini/

It's good in the sounds and back bays, we've never tried it in the surf.

They don't work well for that. They are really difficult to make a bottom turn with. They are fun if you like nose diving a lot.

I've got a skeg for it, but never tried it. it's supposed to help it track and steer.

That's something many have not tried - slide the backpack into the back of the kayak and when you find a wooded island you get to camp you need 2x the amount of water or launch a poncho upside down between trees to catch rain water. Great way to go birding and stealth camping...

I floated and paddled the upper reach if the Missouri River, Fork to Polebridge of the North Fork of the Flathead River, Bowman Lake, Pray Lake and Two Medicine Lake in Glacier National Park, MT near where I live.

I have played with the Remix XP10 during a demo day and really liked it. It's the kind of boat I'd find great for around the Knoxville area when I want to explore the tighter stuff. Until then I have 4 ranging from 14'6 to 17'6 and am not a brand-person as much as I am a function/comfort person. I second the idea of a 14'+ for open water or fast running. Shorter boats are more agile and sometimes more stable but you do 2-3x the work to get the same distance and have a lot less room for carrying stuff.

For what it's worth, I easily fit 4 days worth of gear plus lots of luxuries in my 17' Wildernes Tsunami and that was for 2 people. She was using my 17' Perception Eclipse and she could have pretty much much carried her drinks in it. We split the load up just to make it easier but between the two of us 2-weeks with everything from coolers to chairs, 2 tents, 3 hammock rigs, etc. and plenty (and I do mean plenty) of room to spare.

One other thing someone pointed out: Craigs List can be a fantastic resource! Just make sure you do your homework, ask for pics before you have to drive a long distance and if time/location allows an average seller won't hesitate for a test paddle. There are also frequent demo-days in spring/summer from some of the better shops so that you can get out and try a variety of boats. There are a few that I thought I'd love, did a demo and was pretty soured on, and a few that I thought looked cooky only to end up buying. Different boats feel/handle/sit differently just like people have different body types to enjoy them.

I have a Jackson Coosa and a Jackson Cuda 12.

The Coosa is a river boat and has no issues at all with class II rapids, but it's added rocker makes for a little aggravation on lakes if the wind is up. The Cuda I would take on class II, but it excels on lakes as it's straighter tracking and faster. Both will handle inshore waters with ease, but the Cuda would be my choice if going offshore. Both have tons of dry storage.

I'm looking at Malone racks for the top of the car. We need to carry two kayaks. Should I go with the stackers or the J racks?

I bought some cheap ass Chinese made J racks off of Amazon and haven't had any issues with them, but I'm more apt to throw both on my 6x14 trailer and go with that. I also have a jetski trailer that I salvaged and use for my sneak boat. I have intentions of turning the jet ski trailer into a racked trailer to carry all three.

I realize a Subaru is not tall, but are you going to have help raising and lowering the boats if you go the J rack route? Something to consider....

Spent the last two days and nights on the Etowah with 6 friends, I make up for bad eating while hiking by pigging out on float trips, took two gallon zip locks, one with chunks of chicken breast, mushrooms, peppers, squash marinated in every kind of hot sauce and marinade in the house...and bourbon of course... other bag had hot sausage. Eggs and bacon both mornings, lots of bacon. Too long a story for the details but had to answer a call for help in the middle of the night from a "lady" on the other side of the river, two girls that had floated by us just before dark...their john boat should have had the name 'Stupidity" written on the side.

Sounds like a good time drybones. I took 7 nieces and nephews on a over night to hog back ridge shelter. We tented nearby. Youngest was 4 and the oldest was 11. Everyone behaved and did great. I even behaved on this trip

I have another question.....

I bought my crossbars and stackers. I'm trying to figure out the spacing of the crossbars. Do I put them as far forward and as far back as I can place them?

I'm not familiar with Malone roof racks, but when I was working for a Trek dealership, we went thru lots of training from Yakama and Thule reps how to properly install their racks, and there is a reason the towers go in certain places... They work with the auto manufactures to know exactly where the braces/supports are located... I had a customer who did not like the way his rack looked on his Mazda3 so he remounted it and it crushed the roof/door jam the first time he tightened it...

I just throw the boats in the back of the Tundra and tie them down, I wouldn't know how to take care of a boat...although...I did take reasonable care of the 17' Current Designs Storm GT I had.
