Cans are actually quite good from the perspective of preserving the beer. Drinking from a bottle is maybe more pleasing than from a can, but if it's a good beer, I'm pouring it into a glass anyway. For years, microbreweries always bottled their beer, partly because there was a perception that only cheap beer is sold in cans. Also, setting up a canning line is a big capital investment that small microbreweries (nanobreweries?) can't afford. But fortunately this is now changing and a lot of local microbrews are caning their product. There is a company in Colorado that developed a beer canning line on a truck. They franchise this technologies to local companies. We have one here. For a relatively small fee, a small local brewery can lease the mobile canning line for a day and can a batch of beer for distribution, and thus avoid the capital investment in their own canning line. This is good for backpackers, as I have brought a can of beer on the trail (but I wouldn't want to carry a bottle for the weight). On my last hike I lugged a can of Founders Centennial IPA over a mountain and drank it with dinner on the first night. mmmmmm

Would that be Thunderbird or Red Rooster you're drinking? When I was young I helped a friend out by running his liquor store when he he needed off, Thunderbird was the wino's beverage of choice.I may grow old but I'll never grow up. -
