Back in the sand since early May. The humidity is always high like that in the morning. Now it's back down to 9%. Temp 116 at 1:50 p.m.

I was surveying a property today and a 1500' +/- creek was the back property line. The creek itself was in a tunnel of vegetation so I was walking it with my compass, pacing the runs and making notes of everything. As I was nearing the end I was bitching about being drenched in sweat and covered in spider webs. Then I walked out of the the jungle and into the pasture to head back to the truck....that's when the monsoon hit. All I could do was laugh. If your Doctor is a tree, you're on acid.

post script...I'm never complainin' about bein' hot again! -
Right now my boys are out overhauling a bi*ch of a structure fire in that heat. My crew got sent back to our station so the airfield is covered. Those inconsiderate aircraft wouldn't quit flying.Do your duty in all things. You cannot do more, you should never wish to do less. - Robert E. Lee

Too hot and too dry for this little corner of the world. The heat isn't that bad, relatively speaking when compared to some of the rest of the numbers posted here but several days of high 70's and low 80's with nary a cloud in sight is hot and horrible for Alaska. We now have a 500 acre wild fire right outside of Anchorage churning through a bunch of dead, beetle ravaged spruce. Not to mention the many other HUGE as in over 10,000 acre fires burning in less populace places around the state. The forecast says we're supposed to get rain starting tomorrow for the next week. Alaska weather is notoriously hard to predict, so here's hoping the weather guesses are right.“Only those who will risk going too far can possibly find out how far one can go.” - T. S. Eliot

When I was on a float on one of those big gray taxis (Saipan, I think?) not all that far from where I am now, I would often hang a hammock (nothing elaborate) in one of our helos on the flight deck and sleep there rather than the cramped (not nearly as cramped as a destroyer, I'm sure), smelly, noisy berthing area. Hang the hammock just right and it'd sway with the motion of the ship. Good times!Do your duty in all things. You cannot do more, you should never wish to do less. - Robert E. Lee

Hitting triple digits tomorrow with heat index of least 115. I will be doing more yard work for the wife, except the hottest part when I will head in to the office to do some real work. Youngest son is umping a Dixie World Series, but at least he is getting paid. Definitely probably prefer being in the field instead of behind the plate on day like that.
Really looking forward to get out of this heat at the end of next week and picking back up in Dalton with plan to make it to Hanover, NH.The road to glory cannot be followed with much baggage.

We got a few light showers today but all total it probably only rained for an hour. The wind shifted from NNW to SSE, so now all the smoke is blowing in to Anchorage. It was a fun day keeping all the windows closed and trying to explain to my dog why he needed to do his business as quickly as possible and not linger in the yard. No A/C up here in the Last Frontier, so with the windows closed, it gets a bit stuffy. It's still better than opening them up and feeling like you just took a big inhale right over a camp fire.
The fire itself jumped up to 842 acres and is within a mile in two different directions of neighborhoods. The good news is that the milder day and the addition of several hot shot crews from NorCal and Oregon (thank you SSSSOOO much to them), supplementing our local hot shot crews means the fire has gone from 0% containment to 5% containment.
Fingers still crossed for the forecast rain.“Only those who will risk going too far can possibly find out how far one can go.” - T. S. Eliot -
Recent wild land firefighting efforts within Utah have been hampered by folks flying drone aircraft. Aircrews immediately suspend retardant drops when such activity is sighted.
On Friday a lighting strike ignited a fire on Antelope Island, the largest island within the Great Salt Lake. Of course a few fools attempted to video the event using drones.
Scouts had planned a hike on the island today, but leaders wisely cancelled plans even prior to officials closing access to the island.
