Much needed rain falling for the past 20 hours. Assists in subduing the fires to the NW. So far the death toll in Utah from flash flooding is 16.

Winter is quickly approaching here in south central Alaska. In the past week the snow has gone from being dust on the highest peaks to racing down the sides of all of them. After a solid week and a half (at least) of nothing but rain down here in the bowl, I shouldn't have been as surprised as I was by the snow line but it really did seem to race down as have the temps. Lows are in the low 30's at night and highs make it up to high 40's/low 50's during the day. The entire "feel" of outside changed and now it's brisk.
Here's a view from my hood that I snapped yesterday because it was just too pretty not to.

it's supposed to rain all weekend here in central VA so I have set up my new bear paw tarp with my MYOG net tent to see how they do in the rain and wind. So I am sitting out under my tarp in the backyard. I just can't get the kid out of me."Dazed and Confused"

Cool, damp, cloudy. 70F at Noon. I've been thinking of putting up my tent, so when it rains I can check for seam leaks... but my sister's kids wouldn't be able to restrain themselves from bothering my tent.--

We have had an extended period of freakishly perfect weather - sunny, highs in the mid to uppers 70's, lows in the mid 50's. People in MI don't know what to do. On Tuesday a cold front is moving through with some rain, but then they are predicting another 10 days of equally perfect weather, just 10 degees cooler.

It's 37 degrees and pouring a mix of rain and snow. I suspect it will all turn to snow overnight and we might, maybe, possibly get a dusting of accumulation since I think the ground is still too warm for much else. The areas north of here have gotten several inches so far and will probably get a foot or two before it's all over.

It's raining in AL but if the forecast for cool nights hold for the week end I'll do a short overnight hike.
Have you heard anything on AL state park closings ? I've been watching telly, and all I see is a song and dance on funding, no not funding, funding.--

Kathy has lost sooooo many flower plants because of my way of thinking that I'm not allowed to cut the grass anymore
Oh, and it's pouring down rain right now.
We need it here in NY too. -
I went through my hand-held eclipse photos and found one that wasn't too awful. This is a high-end point & shoot. The camera is amazing but has one very nasty flaw, and I'm debating whether to send it back for service/repair. It's still in warranty. But I hate to lose it even for a few weeks. Anyway, it was a long exposure, too long for hand-held really, but the image stabilization must have saved my bacon here. This is with a very high ISO setting on the camera, and some fairly aggressive noise reduction in Lightroom. This is a very aggressive crop, only a tiny portion of the frame is visible.

I survived the first snow of the season but it did make my walk to and from work colder and wetter than usual. The official report from the closest measuring station was 3.9 inches which corresponds with the unofficial measuring report from my backyard which was approximately 4 inches. It's already melting and I'm sure will just be a wet mess by tomorrow. Drive just a couple of hours north and they got like 20 inches. It's unusually wet, heavy snow for Alaska. Typically, we get super dry stuff.
Any-who - for your viewing pleasure. My blurry pics from last night around 8:30PM local time and then my not so blurry pics from this morning around 8:30AM local time.

The gov has declared a state of emergency here. The hurricane may come right at us here on Sunday. Everyone is getting ready to hucker down. The sky already looks wicked and the storm is still 900 miles away!"Dazed and Confused"

Rain not all that extreme here in MA yet. Torrential at times, but then long periods of no rain at all. Even a touch of sun here and there.
Forecasters are concerned about a big storm surge and beach erosion in the mid-Atlantic, but that's not necessarily an issue for the trails. -

I'm not lost. I know where I am. I'm right here. -
No question, your moon photos are much better, AK. Mine were just... a shot in the dark.
I'm currently in the process of trying to get the camera sent back to Sony for service. Nothing wrong with the optics -- but it has a habit of turning itself on, all by its lonesome. Very bizarre. I checked it out on Google and it seems I'm not the only one to be plagued by this.
(Best theory is they're using a very weak pullup or pulldown on the on/off switch -- the problem seems to manifest in the presence of moisture and humidity.)
Aside from that, it's a sweet little toy. -

7 days and counting with no end in sight.....
Beautiful sky tonight with the broken storm clouds being backlight by a mostly full moon, lightning off in the distance and a low flying P-3 Orion coming right at me. Beautiful. I was driving a backroad so I couldn't get a picture. If your Doctor is a tree, you're on acid. -
