I read it and I liked it. I was shaking my head a lot of times at her questionable decisions but I admired her. The story made me laugh and cry.Lost in the right direction.

I can relate to her feeling lost after her moms death having watched my dad suffer with cancer and then losing my mom to sepsis. I felt lost for a long time."Dazed and Confused"

What's that batman?Dogs are excellent judges of character, this fact goes a long way toward explaining why some people don't like being around them.

I'll add it to my list. I'm reading 3 books right now so it'll be a while.Lost in the right direction. -
I finished reading "Wild". I thought it was a good read, actually it was hard for me to put it down. Now I've got AWOL's book to read. I also started my own journal on postholer for my hiking next year if anyone wants to read along starting April 2015."Dazed and Confused"

I thought Cheryl Strayed had quite an entertaining writing style! I've read her book twice. I really identified with her in many ways.www.appalachiantrailclarity.com - Life on the A.T.

I haven't read it yet......maybe...........maybe we will go to the movie........I do hike with 2 girls
but, I was thinking about all the movie hype I have seen lately. Will the trails get super crowded over the next few years, like the rivers in Montana did after the 'River runs through it" did?Cheesecake> Ramen -

I spent the night with a group at Thomas Knob Shelter last summer that was hiking for about a week because one of them had read the book. So it was great to see some college and high school students out in woods that probably would not have normally due to someone reading a book.
But now a movie inspiring hundreds at a time doing something they really are not probably prepared for could have a negative effect, especially if they are ignorant of LNT principles. The road to glory cannot be followed with much baggage.

This is a pretty cool article about the movie's character and Strayed herself.

Kathy and I had a date night last Friday and seeing the movie Wild was part of it.
While it was entertaining enough, and well done, it wouldn't inspire me to gear up, and go for a long hike.
The movie was more about her life than about hiking.
Just my 2 cents. -

If anything, A walk in the Woods motivated people to get out and hike. I've heard people say they started hiking after reading it, including several in the cafe, but I've never heard anyone say they thru hiked after reading it.Lost in the right direction.

Disagree. Particularly with foreign hikers.
Numbers recorded by ATC support me.
Bryson's book had significant impact on numbers briefly and awareness of the trail long term.
Wild won't have same effect because it is essentially a "chick flick" set in a hiking environment. It is not a hiking movie, although I enjoyed it.
Walk in the Woods movie will impact AT numbers.Resident Australian, proving being a grumpy old man is not just an American trait. -

I don't know the movie will have the same appeal or impact the book did. the book was very good, one of the best, although its not exactly a primer on thru hiking, it was very entertainingits all good -

Why would it inspire them to thru hike. Bryson did not come anywhere close to doing a thru. The road to glory cannot be followed with much baggage.

For a minute there I thought I needed a translator, but I think I understand it now.
Back to AWITW, it was a great well written book, that got me on to the AT and then reading a lot of other books about people who actually did thru hike the AT.The road to glory cannot be followed with much baggage.

This is always one part of the AWITW discussion that I never understand. It does not matter in any way if Bryson actually finished a thru-hike or not.Of course I talk to myself... sometimes I need expert advice. -

this is true. the book is funny and informative, and in no way represents itself as some sort of thru hiking primer. instead, it made more people aware that thru hiking even exists, and turned others on to the possibility of their own grand misadventure.
I still don't think the movie will have the same mass appeal the book did, but we'll see.its all good -

I agree it is a great book written by a good writer that made me and many other people more aware of the AT. It led me to many other books that inspired me to want to do a thru hike some day.The road to glory cannot be followed with much baggage.
