anybody ever hiked this? sounds interesting. from usa today:

      New England Trail

Officially designated as a national scenic trail in 2009, the New England Trail gives federal recognition to 215 miles of an historic three-trail system leading from Long Island Sound through the rocky ridges, forests and farmlands of central Connecticut and Massachusetts, to the New Hampshire border. Known as the "Triple-M" or "3M" Trail, the NET includes segments of the Metacomet-Monadnock Trail, with its exposed summits and waterfalls; the Mattabesett Trail in southern Connecticut; and the Metacomet Trail, which follows the eponymous north-south ridgeline.

My daughter hiked on the Mass portion of this trail when she lived there for a year.

I just hiked a section of the new england trail which is also part of the quinnipiac trail near naugatuck state forest -- past Roaring Brook Falls. Hiking the New England Trail is my favorite way to sneak away for an hour or two. Some of the trail sections are very seldom hiked and are surprisingly pretty. ...i hope i have my facts right here...

    • just thought i'd wake up this thread, since i've become more interested in the NET lately. It actually runs through my littlish town of Wallingford, with the nearest trailhead 5 miles from my house. (drum roll) My wife and I just opened the Bell Tower B&B, find us on facebook or on airbnb. We'd like to encourage NET hiking, which is difficult because there are almost no allowed camping sites. We are trying to organize B&B's to shuttle and support the trail. ...so, hit me up if you want the special treatment deal with shuttles!!! Forgive me for the shameless self promotion.

      Good luck with your venture.
I've heard of the NET but know nothing about it.
    • I think I put this in 'Walks w/me', this was a day hike 5 miles north of Laz. It was called Mattabesett, a local Sachem. It hooks up with the Metacomet, another Sachem, and heads north into Massachusetts, but I am totally unfamiliar with. I would say that the fast approaching fall season would be the best time to take in this part of the country.

    • My fiancee lives about 5 miles from one of the trail crossing in MA. She is not a backpacker or hiker but is willing to try so I have bought the maps and we will be starting out doing some day hikes on it to see how it goes.

The maps IMHO are high quality with good detail

Right HERE is link to their web

Of course, if one of us won the lotto, we could all retire and start hiking much more often.
when i win the lotto, i'll share the money with those who shared the cost of the tickets with me.
The first time I visited the The Mirage casino in Las Vegas, I was standing next to a slot featuring a tie-in with several other casino slots. I heard an older man ask a woman for a dollar as he wanted to play the machine but was out of cash. She handed him a buck and when he played, he won serval 10s of millions.
They danced around for several minutes in celebration prior to security hustling them away for the paperwork.

The next day I read in the paper the woman was his ex-wife and he and his current wife had arranged a visit to LV with her. He was quoted as saying he would award part of the winnings to her as she had loaned him the dollar.

      Lest we forget.....

    • Another short afternoon on the NET. I parked in Durham and walked south into Rockland Preserve, in Madison. I did finally find the tent platforms. 6 of them, each with a clean fire ring. Privy 20 yards away, large campfire and cook area another 10 yards. This could be a very quick overnite get away!

Three weeks in a row! I have been reconning the lower part. I can do this one weekend soon. At least from near Laz on Friday nite, finish Sunday 10 miles from my house and three houses from my uncle 'Lou' in Guilford. South of that it is in a more populated area and more road walks. All this system was poorly marked and kept when I was a kid and we walked these trails in scouts.
