I signed up for a maintenance work day on the Pinhoti with the meetup group I hike with, it was posted that since the forest service was involved anyone using a chainsaw must be USFS certified, I laughed at it at first, then got pissed...before long a permit will be required to wipe your a$$ on government land.I may grow old but I'll never grow up.

On At crews and NyNj crews, no doubt AMC, to operate a chain saw you must be a ATC Certified 'Sawyer', class patch and everything!Cheesecake> Ramen -

And the safety equipment you need is no small investment

On another note, Kathy and I walked the boundaries of the AT lands in the area of Graymoor.
It was a good day to get this done, a temperature that was just above chilly, partly cloudy and a breeze that was just right.
There's one survey monument that we're declaring missing, It had been set in a pile of rocks and now the pile is knocked over and scattered.
The other downer was that Kathy lost a nice pair of clippers, oh well.
On the upside, and far exceeding the negatives, we meet a group of thru hikers. It was 2 families, that met on the trail, and between them had 5 kids and 4 parents. They had some more miles to do in NY + CT and then were going down to VA to finish off about 300+ miles there. They hope to finish by Thanksgiving. The kids seemed well mannered, engaged, and excited to tell their story. The parents were kind of nice too, didn't speak unless spoken to. By that I mean they didn't try to correct, or build upon what the kids said but offered their own version and information when we asked them.
One day before long I'm gonna go back and look for the missing monument. Not being a surveyor I won't be allowed to put it back in place but I'd like to find it.
No photos to offer as we forgot to bring a camera.

I'm USFS chainsaw certified. I got it at Shoal Creek Ranger District. It allows me to buck and limb on Federal property. No felling. Well, no big stuff. Up to 5 in. diameter. There's really never a need to though. I know what you mean about the "red tape". With the Feds it takes an act of God to get anything done. I'm surprised the new map finally came out. They only talked about for like forever.Changes Daily→ ♪♫♪♫♪♫♪♫ ♪♫♪♫♪♫ ← Don't blame me. It's That Lonesome Guitar. -

One last project for the season and for West Mountain. the hardening of a stream crossing. At the junction of the AT and bike/ranger access road, NOBO at the bottom of the climb we changed. A stream runs under the road and comes out as a small brook in a gully that you slip and slide down 10' to some unstable rocks that you hop over and then you slide up the 10' to the road bed and cross the AT as it climbs. The plan is to knock it out Sat/Sun. I'm sure some of the guyz have been out doing some prep work.
All hands welcome!!! Anthony Wayne South lot, 9am.....see you all thereCheesecake> Ramen -

I also found out that it is not the last project of the year. We have one more weekend up at Fitzgerald Falls. No steps, just fixing some areas that need help.
this will be virgin territory for me. I have never walked between Wildcat Shelter and Elk Pen.Cheesecake> Ramen -

We have a project in spring on 7 lakes Parkway, just below Bear Mtn, not at Torati Circle area. There is also talk of a large project on The Long Path. But I have no details.Cheesecake> Ramen -

It's nice territory, but tough. I think one of these hills (or the section) is called "Agony Grind." I've heard several hikers comment on how tough it was, between Island Pond Outlet and NY 17. -

just did fitzgerald to 17 a few weeks ago with atlt(still havent figured out how to pronounce atlt).its a beautiful section of mixed terrain, from fitzgerald to bear mtn is defintiely the toughest part of new york. agony grind is overrated, but the section is fairly difficult. almost always surprises nobos.its all good -

There is a video in the You-tube set that I posted, of this crew doing some work in '13' on 'Agony Grind'. I was not with them yet.
It's a classic roller coaster of several ascents and descents of 300-500 vertical feet, with a road crossing at each dip.
My not-so-stealthy site just above the falls.

I was talking with Jeff Senterman about NY Long Path back in September. He was talking about a big project in the works, awaiting the approval of a new DEC Unit Management Plan for Sundown Wild Forest. They were talking about building new trail from the Bengle Hill trail above Riggsville down all the way to Vernooy Kill, eliminating virtually all the roadwalk between Wawarsing and Riggsville, and allowing the trail to visit Vernooy Kill Falls. I understand this is the next phase, following up on the Warner Creek and Romer Mountain connections, both of which are sweet trails. If this is the project you're talking about, I'll see you there. I'm most likely not physically up to the rock work you do, but I can use loppers and saw, or hump in supplies for the technical crews, or the other odd stuff that needs doing.
NY Long Path is really shaping up, at least north of Orange County (which is an insoluble problem, I'm afraid). The 110 miles through the Catskills are absolutely gorgeous - and tough. It traverses the east half of the Devil's Path, and the whole of the Burroughs Range and Escarpment trails. There are spots (Sugarloaf and Twin come to mind) that I'll stack up against the Wildcats or Beaver Brook in terms of technical difficulty. And wherever you look, it looks like a Thomas Cole painting.I'm not lost. I know where I am. I'm right here. -
I won't see the guyz untill next weekend, I will inquire. You may find yourself wearing a new work shirt, Kev. This work is addicting. I would have NO problem walking into the Catskills and bivouacking near the work site. We can always use help humping tools into the job.Cheesecake> Ramen

The cuben is kinda crispy, while the sil/nylon is more chewy. Both are improved with honey. -
I have been informed that there will be route scouting walks over the next week for a Long Path relocation around Long Mountain. That is all I know. This will probably be a hike in and bivouac for a few days and work expeditionCheesecake> Ramen
