I seldom use poles. Poles are for skiing, especially cross country. I might be willing to try downhill skiing without them. I used poles a lot during 2011, but I was doing a lot of things wrong that year. I weighed 240 pounds (5'11") and carried 60 pounds on my back.
The only hiking poles I used were made from down dead wood. I broke one crossing a pile of rocks. Thankfully it did not cost any money.
Poles are sometimes useful for pitching a tarp. I wrap a ridgeline around the top of the poles and stake the ends.I am human and I need to be loved - just like everybody else does -
