i remember that, we were trying to stay warm.

The family and I went to William B. Umstead state park today and did an easy 8 mile loop.
ncparks.gov/Visit/parks/wium/main.php
It's a really nice park but very crowded.
While hiking my 15 year old hit me up for permission to get a tattoo when she turns 16.Sometimes you will never know the value of a moment until it becomes a memory.

My daughter asked the same thing. I told her when she turned 18 she can do whatever she wants as long as she pays for it. I guess that wasn't the right answer...she now has 2...and multiple piercings. But I'm not really a good role model since I have several also.Lost in the right direction. -

Ha Ha classic, "Hit dad up when he's in a good mood and doin' what he loves to do" total chick move. Don't be surprised if the wife knew it was coming...Womens! sheesh. -

Really? You were trying to stay warm?
I thought we were trying to make up for the mileage we wouldn't do by bailing out a day early -

I wasn't having any trouble staying warm. I was hiking up West Mountain with Mrs. LIhikers to tell Moose and Scotty and whoever else was up there that we were bailing. Not that bad a climb - it's just 600 feet of vertical - but the ice was treacherous at the top. I was good - I was wearing spikes, but Moose fell a time or two on the way down.I'm not lost. I know where I am. I'm right here.

Well, I wanted to make it clear that I hadn't suggested the bailout because I was too lazy to climb West Mountain - since I climbed it anyway.
I had to bail out on the second day with the stomach crud, but I hear that this year's Harriman trip had major trouble with ice. I'm sure your new trail work is wonderful, but bad ice happens on the best of trails. (And thanks for all the work! The trail maintainers who do technical rock work are among the trail seraphim - trail angels of the highest order.)I'm not lost. I know where I am. I'm right here. -

At a family birthday party this weekend, my 33 year old nephew, asked me about backpacking the Whites. he got his buds to do a day hike, but none will backpack. He is the 3rd. All 3 boys lived their lives. They have camped all their lives, and he is very capable. Just never backpacked. i explained that the only real issue is being prepared for the elements. I have offered to drag him along this early spring, and by summer, the black flies will be gone and he should be fine, I may even go with him.Cheesecake> Ramen

That's a pretty pup you guys have.
She's a Shiloh Shepherd.
She loves being outdoors and we bought a 3 person tent so that she can come along on our trips.
And she's got all the usual gear anyone could need to spend time in the woods.
She stays on leash except when we're in the tent, or she'd chase every animal for miles around.
The only animal she's seen and not wanted to chase have been moose. -

Short walk indeed.....even shorter than I planned..... but I did get out for at least a day hike.....with an overnite load(3 day load, for normal folks).
Catskills in the distance, I-84, Taconic Parkway Cloverleaf down below. The wind was howling the entire walk along Hosner Mtn. New York
I did not camp. I cruised thru the day, and ended up at RPH shelter early. The area around the place was muddy. The shelter was cold and damp. Bill gave me a ride back to the Fish Car, so I went home.
My new walking shoes did fine. Even with spikes along about 1 mile of the ridge that still had some ice & snow.
It was nice to get out!Cheesecake> Ramen -

All sorts of stuff the last few weeks.......trail building..........annual Mtn.Biking/drinking/smoking/eating/napping/BSing Fishing Trip last week.....trail building again this week. My short walks have been the 200 yards down the street to the Subaru dealer...5 times a day.
..anyhow, I ask our NC/Tenn folks a question. Hoping one of you folks kind of notices and keeps some kind of trac of it. The Rhodies on Roan Mtn, when will they bloom. We were 3 weeks late for plants here, we are now 2 weeks behind. So I will imagine that will also be the case on a 5000 foot mountain. So, a good guess? Anyone?Cheesecake> Ramen -

Our work crew was treated to a guided tour of this wonderful walk up in The Shawangunk Mtns. New York
On the top of these hills are a series of cracks in the earth that hide from the sun and keep ice and snow long into the season. The snow is no big deal, especially after 2 years of Polar vortexes, but the walk was fun and the caves were wonderful.Cheesecake> RamenThe post was edited 3 times, last by CoachLou: pics coming....as soon as I can get my gadget to give them up! Nice shots!
How hard is it nowadays to get permission for Sam's Point/Shingle Gully? When the Nature Conservancy first bought the land, they were snickety about it - you had to be in the office at the stroke of 8 am because all the permits would be gone in 15 minutes and you couldn't reserve in advance.I'm not lost.
