Stealth implies not wanting to be caught. It is often confused with dispersed, which is legal.Non hikers are about a psi shy of a legal ball. -

What is so incoherent about the Swamp Swami and his warped reasoning is that the discussion of illegal activity does not constitute committing said activity. I have discussed all kinds of illegal activity that I have no intentions of doing. He has a God complex. He reads minds, knows intent, and can see the future. In his world, if a speeding car crashed into me, I would not be able to discuss it because it was an illegal activity.Non hikers are about a psi shy of a legal ball. -

Bet there's a story there... sort of like "How did I get this tattoo" or "where's that lost shaker of salt?"Be wise enough to walk away from the nonsense around you! -

I will when I get there. I hate staying in shelters. 400 miles on trail so far and I have stayed in 3 shelters ."Dazed and Confused"

The Whiyes are a National Forest, not a Park. Thus you don't have LEO Ranger mentality of the few rangers in the back country. You have AMC ridge runners. Mostly college kids working as a summer job. Don't be a brazzen donkey's behind & you should be ok.

I must admit I had a point where I lost my temper in the Whites.
Got to a hut where it was full of students and we would have had to tent anyway.
The water source was the nearby lake.
The point where we went to get water there were several dead creatures in the water. Did not want to drink the water even after filtering and AquaMira, it was that putrid.
Ended up hiking on to the next road even though it was close to dark when we got there.
I have no problem with the AMC and their charges but, and it may be my Australian attitude to water, I find it offensive that at campsites that they are charging for and obviously collecting significant amounts (multiply $8 by about 20 at that site for one night in a shelter no better than others along the AT) and don't have some sort of filtered water supply.
A one off expenditure and working bee installing a commercial size water filtration setup would have me happily pay their fee.Resident Australian, proving being a grumpy old man is not just an American trait. -

Makes sense to me.The road to glory cannot be followed with much baggage.

Essentially the Whites have the same lack of "natural" water sources that you have along the entire Bibbulmun Track.
The difference is that we have water tanks at all our (free) huts.
In this country it is actually illegal to deny access to water.Resident Australian, proving being a grumpy old man is not just an American trait. -

we're exactly is there space to camp In the whites? it looks like all mountain top well from the pictures and videos I saw but then again who just video tapes miles of woods when you have a crazy view from a crazy windy mountain top. Ill be hammock camping think I could have better luck with the stealth camping? My hammock is green that's gotta count for something lol.

With a hammock you have an advantage camping in the Whites. There are many restriction as to how far away from the road, trail, hut, shelter, etc. Normally 1/4 mile. Finding a site that meets legal restrictions & is clear & flat it difficult with the hills & underbrush. I always suggest asking shelter caretakers. THey know the area & most are helpful.

Agree with that. For a hammock there are so many little spots there that you couldn't use a tent but the hammock would work.Sometimes you will never know the value of a moment until it becomes a memory.

Been awhile, but I didn't pay a dime to camp anywhere in the whites. Is it that much worse or are people just babies?
I agree with the "no camping above treeline" because of the vegitation, but not fer the AMC. Other than that rule, I had no problems stealthing my way through. Although I did spend four days at ZF hut trying to hook up with a gal on the cru.
