I remember when I was about a mile or so from Rockfish Gap running into a "seasoned" female trail maintainer that looked very "Old Dominion-ish". Must have said something about I was looking forward to going into town (or at least taking a shower and resupplying) and she asked where I was going to stay. I gave her the name of the "cheap" motel from the AWOL AT Guide where I had sent a resupply box. She didn't recognize the name and said it must be a hole in the wall. She was right, but it was really close to the popcorn/hot dog stand and SNP entrance. :)

I found the first 1/3 to 1/2 of the book to be funny and entertaining. After that, I found it borderline annoying. The movie was disappointing. But the book was not really about hiking anyway.

Pretty much the same. But I think alot of people would have enjoyed the book more if they realized it was not about hiking, but was about NOT hiking.

My favorite bits were his observations about how our society is geared driving and not walking. He was doing a zero in some town and found it was almost impossible to walk due to the grocery store due to busy roads with no sidewalks. Then there were the people who complained there wasn't enough parking near the gym because they couldn't be bothered to walk a few blocks en route to working out.

Yes, got muddy I believe. I think that was also in the movie. Were they staying at the motel with Mary Steenburgen as the proprietor when that happened?

Here in Dallas there is a TV investigative reporting on some of the roads in east and south Dallas and how dangerous they are to pedestrians. A few miles between Walk signals, 4 lanes, 45 MPH (people going 55 and even 60). Wife drives on one of the roads and commented how it is dangerous. I commented that those roads were the original Loop and US 80 the main road east/west, before I20 and I30 were even thought about. How some of the roads were the original "loop" (there are about 4....let see...the original roads, then Loop 12, then I635...now they have tollways also doing loops around) and since they were the "loop", they were supposed to be 45 and back after WWII that was considered the quick way around the city. About three stories into the series, someone DID point out that the original design was in the 40's and yes, it should now be revisited/revamped. Times change.

I have been to answer 3 times, but was never as bad as my afternoon on Mt Lafayette.
Glasses fogged up so bad I couldn't see.

Based upon Another Kevin's advice carried Cat Crap in my pack since. Never used, but one time in Maine I probably should have.

I bought two little things of it on Amazon. Used it once just to see. Seemed to be OK. I've not been in bad weather enough lately to test it. You do have to treat as it wears off from regular cleaning and wiping.

If you are stuck out, you can always do the scuba divers trick. Spit on your glasses, rub firmly with fingers until you feel a drag and hear a squeak. Glasses are clean then and somewhat fog resistant.

I had to think for a second to recall today's question. Funny
Do they have a question on the average cost of a thru hike? If so, the answer could be 5% of my trust fund.
I forget if they do. If they do it would be one of their "Average" questions. I know there is a "How much time does the AVERAGE thru hike take?".

And the "accuracy" of an average (mean) is always dependent on the quality of the sample from the actual population.
