      I'm guessing the most photographed location on the AT by thru-hikers is either the plaque at Springer Mountain or the arch at Amacalola. Many never make it as far as the question of the day.

      The most photographed location on the AT by anyone? Tough call. The location above is popular and gets plenty of day-hikers, but I am not sure. I'll vote for Clingman's Dome. Fairly easy access by car, popular summer destination, and photogenic.

      Good points. I'm guessing there are a lot of people hitting Clingman's, the arch and other places within 1/4 mile of a parking lot and a soda machine.

      Mt Katahdin standing on sign may not quite be the most photographed, but it is the most special for those who make it. :)

      according to the map, the trail goes around Clingmans Dome. So it's a safe bet that the majority of visitors to the observation tower do what tI did, drive to the parking lot and walk the paved path to the tower. This does not cross or use the Trail. I say it lises on a technicality.
      I believe Clingman's Dome is also considered the name of the mountain, not just the concrete tower.

    • That was my favorite river to kayak and solo canoe back when I was young enough to do such things. The class 3 rapid at the end was just about the extent of my abilities. I never felt comfortable enough to try a class 4 on another river. We spent a lot of weekends up there after my thru.

      The water temperature in the summer averages 45 degrees. It's a cold swim.

      We stayed the night at the emergency shelter during a massive winter storm including thunder snow. Had literally dozens of strikes a couple hundred yards away. Even knocked out the power to the massive light that adorns the memorial. One of the best trips I've ever done.
