For the record, I always use paper maps but want to know how to use other resources just in case.

Dang, I didn't mean to give the impression that I was angry...after two, weirdly slow days at work and spending too much time online, I needed to unplug.mental note wrote:

They are equivalent. I think I'm wrong about NAD83, it's also a datum (duh, North American Datum 83.)mental note wrote:

at the beginning of this thread there is a link to the military manual FM- somethin or other that explains all that suff, but the link didn't work for me, you can however copy paste it lots of good info in that manual on Datums, gps, and everything.TrafficJam wrote:

This helped me understand a little more about GPS, datum, and coordinates...

I don't know where you are located, but Google Search for an "Orienteering club" near you. I'm in the DFW part of Texas. We have an orienteering club ntoa.com/. We do around 12 events a year and at everyone of them, is a "Basics of Orienteering class". Compass basics. There are clubs in Austin TX, Houston, over in LA.TrafficJam wrote:

Looking at Orienteering USA clubs map, you're in the middle of nowhere, AKA, equidistant from Louisville, Lexington, Raonoke, Atlanta, and Birmingham...
Was it the UT map and compass that was canceled?

There are clubs in Austin TX, Houston, over in LA.If you find a club near you, reach out to them on two fronts. One is show up at their event, bring a base plate compass and old clothes and sturdy shoes. Sign up for the beginner courses (White or Yellow.....both are mostly navigating trails). While there, attend their beginner class. We often have it TWICE. 9 AM and again at 9:30 (event first runners out is usually....officially, 10 AM....I say that it because a lot of advanced people (me among them), go out early. I've headed out on an O-course 2 hours before official start). Attend that beginner class. Here at NTOA meets, it is often taught by the guy who WROTE the Boy Scout handbook on Orienteering!!TrafficJam wrote:

Also, reach out to the club to see if you could meet up with one of their board members for a 1:1 session. Here in N TX, there are several parks where we have permanent Orienteering courses. So you can go out on your own and try your map and compass skills.
Check out for a club near you.
The Boy Scouts near you could also perhaps assist.
