What is your favorite campsite?
For me it has been Ethan Pond in NH. Relatively mild hike to it (for NH). Not very busy compared to many places in the Whites. I always loved sitting by the pond watching the sun set over the Franconia range at the trout feed & a few times watch a moose forage at the other end of the pond. It is a charged site, but I have often helped the resident caretaker with projects he needed a hand with & gotten a free night or two. The highlight of these had to be helping with the four helicopter drops to bring in supplies for the composting privy. We had about 15 minutes to move 800 lbs of supplies out of the tight drop area in front of the shelter. We had a slight reprieve on one drop that was miscalculated & he had to dump it in the inlet stream to the pond because it was too heavy to hover with it.
Even when I moved to the Island it was still an annual trip after I came home to shoot firework shows. One time my friend ad joined me at tail end of a stay & replenished the bourbon supply. A guy that dayhiked up to fish decided he didn't want to cook & offered up the trout he caught that day & about a half stick of butter. After we cleaned & fried the trout up I cooked some rice with the risidual butter. Eating that, sipping bourbon around the fire, watching the sunset. I was thinking, this sucks! I have to leave tomorrow!
