Got in 15 miles this w/e...did an 8 mile night hike last night on the Pinhoti and met some friends doing a day hike for another 7 miles today and caught a ride back to my truck with them....ain't nothing like a flock of turkeys taking off over your head in the dark to give you an adrenaline rush. I kept thinking about the 4' rattle snake my wife almost stepped on the last time we did this section, wondering if another was still in the middle of the trail after warming in the sun.I may grow old but I'll never grow up.

Inadvertently walked over 5 miles this eve.
Volunteered for crowd control during the local Christmas parade, so parked near the assigned intersection. Received a call to escort a float to prevent kids from rushing the float for candy. As I was at the parade end, walked to the start. Once there, was asked to monitor the finish line of the 5k race. Of course I was at the start when asked. Walked to the finish line and returned to the parade starting line at conclusion.
Once the parade started, walked the route with the float. Upon conclusion, needed to return radio and other equipment...at the parade start. Traffic was snarled to the extent couldn't move the vehicle, so returned to the starting point, turned in the equipment, and walked back to the vehicle.
Lest we forget.....

this is a new section of trail at kennesaw mountain that they built a couple years ago for the 150th anniversary of the battle. i was there a couple weeks ago for the first time in a few months and saw that they had placed several cannons since my last visit. this trail is lightly used as most people don't know it exists; i use it when the overflow parking lot is full -- i can drive to the end of the trail and hike 1.5 miles to the visitor center where the main trails start.2,000 miler

Needing a dose of solitude and peace, I decided to hike in the Smokies for the first time in several months. Standing next to my car prior to heading out, several cars pulled into the parking lot and six, very loud Seniors emerged. My heart sank and I took off running down the trail. I ended up hiking and running for 9 miles and finished the loop in 3 hrs.
This dumbass forgot her water but no worries as it's a very familiar trail with plenty of water if needed. (It wasn't).
Lunch was a delicious sandwich made with homemade, buttermilk bread, smoked ham, Brie, and semi-dehydrated, whole cranberry sauce from Thanksgiving. Yum! The only problem was the cranberries kept falling out of the sandwich onto the ground as I walked. The three second rule was in effect and they got picked up and eaten.
It was a beautiful, sunny day.Lost in the right direction. -

Took a short day hike yesterday in the SNP. Parked at Swift Run Gap and hiked up to Hightop Mountain and back. About a 6 mile hike according to the mileage on the trail posts. 1,480 ft of elevation gain from the gap to the top. I did it in 1 hr 45 min, amazing how fast you can cruise along with just a little day pack. Lots and people out for a day hike and I'm sure there were some overnighters out there as the lot at the bottom of Hightop was full. The stream had a little water in it and the trail was in good condition.
Afterwards I popped down the other side of the mountain and had lunch and a beer with my daughter and her husband. Then back up and over the mountain again and stopped at Horton Cellars for a bottle to go. An excellent day.

I walked 2/5 of a mile to the convenience store and back today. My feet slipped out from under me and I landed on my right side. The ground is saturated with water, with mud over frozen ground. There was no sidewalk. I should have walked in the road. Oh well, no harm done.

I'll make sure to announce it when we'll finally finish the AT.
