Appalachian Trail Will Be Accessible Throughout Government Shutdown

      Date Published: Jan 20, 2018

      Appalachian Trail Conservancy
      Statement
      1/20/18

”The Appalachian Trail (A.T.) will remain accessible to the public across the approximately 700 miles managed by the National Park Service (NPS) and over 800 miles managed by the U.S. Forest Service (USFS). A.T. visitors will be able to access and hike on the Trail itself, but no visitor services, maintenance or other management activities will be conducted, and emergency and rescue services will be limited. Any entry onto NPS and USFS property during this period of a federal government shutdown is at the visitor’s sole risk.
All NPS and USFS volunteer programs are also suspended. The Appalachian Trail Conservancy (ATC) will not be able to engage with volunteers in activities on the Trail, Trail facilities or Trail lands.
Our national parks are treasured by Americans nationwide. They not only protect our national heritage, but they are important to local economies and the federal government has a responsibility to keep them both open and adequately funded. We urge Congress and the federal government to work together in the best interests of the country and to re-open the Trail promptly."

    • I ran into like a dozen SOBOs in October 2013 in VA north or Pearisburg. They closed down SNP, so they all dropped further down south. A lot of stupid grandstanding (like barricading the WW2 "walk up" memorial) just for PR to spin the press back then.

Same thing happened in Valley Forge Nat Park (2013). The gate was closed for optics, Press and a single spokes person.. Lots of signs that folks ignored. I drove in on one of the back roads. And enjoyed hiking the trails without running into anyone. Oh That got me kicked off the thread at White blaze.
Your SOBO's could have walked thru the park in 2013 and a few did just that. What are they going to do ask you to walk back? In general - they won't give you a ride.

Hmmm, I wonder why this is treated differently than in 2013?
Great Question.... this is what I found.

Keep in mind this is technically a “lapse” in funding. Gov’t isn’t officially shut down unless order goes out from OMB/OPM.

Does this mean that captain tweet will shut up?
No, in case you had not noticed everyone in NEWS is loosing their minds because they were sadly in control of the raw data. in their position under the freedom of speech. They used to have three options. Tell the truth, tell a lie, tell nothing. Well they lost with tweeting, the last two. That would make any socialist, democrat, moderate, independent angry as they lost the advantage to filter or misrepresent the news. They had a huge advantage in telling the uniformed and can't think for themselves prior to ten years ago - how to think. - FOR EXAMPLE. We indoctrinate, the young minds in elementary school with the idea of Dare - "Drug Abuse Resistance Education" to don't do drugs is unfortunately, indoctrination, or brainwashing. Your child comes home after three days or more.... one day that " You are going to die in the near future, because you had a beer.

Once your child achieves College. all is lost. I did not want my son to go to college with the burden of what I know know. I continue to go to college to maintain my three states of licenses every year.

So here is another idea.... captain tweet IS a grown man... He can do whatever he wants. IT's the good, the bad, and the ugly polotics and he embraces it. He dosn't care about the Liberal bias, put yourself in his shoes for a moment. Would you walk a mile doing what the press wants you to do? Shumer did.

OH I forgot... I am a thinking owl - I am not a Democrat, Republican, or independent, I am much worse, I have a family. I have a vote. I hate Republicans and Democrats (Politicians) equally. And I paid for it... thousands.

JJ this is not about you. You are a great guy... I am unfortunately very angry at both parties that are destroying the USA. This week.

    • Ah yes its that college indoctrination...Honest I just need to say think for yourselves. You send your kid to college for what? to sit in a dorm room with a laptop to take a class? They can do that at home. I have hung out with top administrators, Who have told me some incredible stories, and they complain about professors are overpaid for 16 hours a work week. The off campus housing around West Chester is so bad they have installed hall cameras and remote monitoring of halls in every row home. The sex, drugs, and rap parties at the beginning of each year are unbelievable compared to my days at college. Yea I guess I am Scatter brained - but those college parties are so graphic they cannot be uploaded to You Tube, as they would be deleted. Here is one that is OK

I sent my daughter to college. In less than 4 months she will be a doctor.

    • Good for her. Many go, many don't make it. I was about to PM someone to delete the thread, too pessimistic on my part.

JJ I have provided help to a graduate of West Chester's Biology program and out of her graduating class of 900+ the ones that have done their internship are better off finding work locally. She didn't do the internship, and although she graduated with excellent grades and lab work she cannot find work.

We are surrounded by some 30 + corporations with 900+ posted jobs. Now some of those jobs are crap, and others are gold. She doesn't have the skills to get herself hired. I have made suggestions, made changes, given her names to make calls to, and she is still my bartender after a year. Talk about unmotivated. I found out with google ten of her class with her major have found work.... seems a little low. Your next hurdle will come soon.

    • You haven't seen CBS Sunday Morning this week have you? I am not disagreeing with you, just the messenger. Campus life/mayhem/protests is causing a lot of people to ask what it going on? Some Professors are being beaten on campus. Google that.

This weeks broadcast: Got 9 Minutes?

Well lets put this train wreck of a thread back on track.

Back to posts about the AT and the Shutdown.

    • Well I don't worry, My kid is 29 and doing well, and is enrolled in a 2.5 year program of education via the internet. This was his choice - I had nothing to do with it. Now its educating the granddaughter. 1st grade.

Hey I don't even dwell on my wasted tax dollars going to Penn State, or Philadelphia, and Chester High School ( I have been there) There is a twelve step process......(this is my funny bone)

That's one advantage of being a chemistry professor. Not much controversy. I wish we had a protest when we invite a speaker. That would make it more interesting. Last Friday's talk on the use of Lathanide complexes in MRI imaging was soooooo provacative.
I never heard such skulduggery as when I overheard two geologist going at it over which formation came first...I was shocked these fellas could even talk like that, I learned a few things that day about scientist types.
