I struggled with reducing Stalking Tortoise to 5 characters.
STALK too stalky
ST&SS Why should Smoking Sox get a shout-out on my tag? He doesn't even post here!
TORTS TORT-S would have worked but it's 6 characters. TORTS sounds like a legal term
SECTN Section Hiker or SEC Tennessee?
SEXHR Sex Her?
In the end, I opted to recognize the city in the Friesland area of The Netherlands where my family got its name. In 1811, Napoleon was frustrated that too many Dutch men had the same names so he issued a decree stating that every family patriarch had to choose a family name. Some chose their family name based on where they lived. Others used their profession. And the really clever ones chose a Dutch word that was insulting to the French. After Napoleon's demise, the Dutch government decided that having distinct names wasn't a bad idea and chose to keep the recorded family names on the books. Tough luck for the smart asses who picked the insulting names.
So here's to the AT, and here's to Sneek (pronounced Snake). And I've certainly seen my share of snakes on the AT. Cheers!
