While the press was quick to blame hikers... A Firefighter is now charged.

      CHEROKEE COUNTY, N.C. —
A 31-year-old firefighter admitted to setting fires on Indian land because tribal firefighters are compensated only when they fight fires, according to U.S. Attorney Jill Westmoreland Rose.
Raymond Swayney, of Cherokee, North Carolina, pleaded guilty Monday in federal court to conspiracy to set a timber fire and to defraud the United States.
The Bureau of Indian Affairs hires temporary firefighters for emergencies within the boundaries of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indian land.

    • My wife is part Cherokee and my daughter from my first wife is part Crow (both wives had great grandparents who were full blood). Neither is part of any tribe but I've told them they should get together and open a casino. :)

Not an uncommon story unfortunately. Now I wouldn't bash all firemen because I know quite a few and they're good men, but a couple of them ain't right...in the head. ;) Truth!

And if you think that is strange; first wife is married to second wife's cousin. Makes for some strange holiday and family gatherings.

A series of arson fires in California were started by an arson investigator about the 1990s. Or 1980s. Saw it on an investigative show.
Not only was he an arson investigator he was also a well respected arson instructor and wrote a couple of books on arson investigation. A lot of the fires were set on his way home from arson investigation seminars. Unfortunately a couple of firemen died fighting one of his arson fires. To this day he denies setting any fires.

I remember this story...a serial arsonist. Crazy!
    • Sad,

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation announced in a press conference Wednesday that two juveniles have been charged with starting the deadly wildfires in and around Gatlinburg.
Due to the age of the juveniles, officials have released little more information regarding the investigation, but they were charged with aggravated arson.
District Attorney General Jimmy Dunn told reporters that the two are entitled to a juvenile hearing in the next 72 hours.
TBI director Mark Gwyn said the investigation is still active and ongoing.
"We still have a lot of work to do," Gwyn said during the press conference.
Wednesday was the first day that residents were allowed to return to their homes full-time after the massive wildfire left the town deserted for more than a week.
