Even if there's a lot of work to do the hike in can't be that far making it possible to sleep in a real bed each night.

That looks like a dream job. I hope to change careers in the next 3-5 years and find one that allows me to be outside.

I suspect there's an awful lot of math involved with being a surveyor.

When I grow up I want to be a park ranger. But seriously, we have talked about being campground hosts for a few months during the year. Some campgrounds even pay you in addition to getting your spot and utilities.

One of the great aspects of modern technology is that for a hundred-acre preserve, you can do a rough draft of a trail map in a day, just by logging GPS tracks in both directions on all the trails a time or three, and interpolating the errors. Yeah, I know that cliff would seriously confuse GPS, and I see you're doing it right with planetable methods, but that takes four guys (alidade, rod, and two for the chain or tape) and a lot more time. It was nice that I could get the trail data into openstreetmap.org/#map=16/42.7850/-73.8835 in an afternoon stroll. (Amusingly, in that little bird sanctuary, the 'Hidden River Trail' is the right of way for a sewage pipeline.)

(By the way, that sanctuary is just over 100 acres.)
