I looked at 2 other AL state parks I can drive to fairly easily, Noccalula ans Lake Guntersville, well. Neither are what I am looking for. One has an 18 hole golf course and the other has a widdle train to take visitors around the park. I have ridden on park trains, but I don't care for them in an area where I'm camping.
I may have to walk out into Cheaha Wilderness to find a nice quiet spot away fomr tourists, but I don't care to do that by myself. I know there are some campsites on the Pinhoti south of Cheaha and a shelter in Cheaha northeast of the main part of the park.--

Got my clothes and gear all treated with permethrin. Everything hanging on a hobo line in the garage. Time for a pedal and then knock back a PBR or two."Dazed and Confused"

Kathy and I have an unplanned overnighter planned for Monday into Tuesday.
We won't be able to leave until mid-morning Monday and need to be home by Tuesday evening.
We'll probably go the AT, walk in until we feel like setting up camp and spend the night.
We're going to pack 1 dinner, 1 breakfast, 2 lunches and some dog food.
I have a brand new pair of hiking pants that will get their first walk.
The reason for the trip is that Kathy has a bonus week off from work and we'll sleep in the woods just because we can.
The boardwalk in the first photo takes you across a swamp north of Pawling, NY
The picture with Kathy standing next to a big tree is of the famous Dover Oak. It's thought to be the oldest tree along the Appalachian Trail.
And the photo of the shelter shows the Telephone Pioneer Shelter. The box on the outside of the front is the book exchange. The post was edited 1 time, last by LIhikers ().

I remember that shelter. heck of a step out the "front door" and then it had no flat area out front, just straight down the mountain. I almost lost my balance and went down the mountain answering the midnight nature call in front of that shelter."Dazed and Confused"

It's a small shelter so I'd suggest to not go during thru hiker season. There aren't many flat spots to tent right there either -
Looks like my AT section plans (I40 to Hot Springs) have fallen through. Alas. So for now, there are no plans (hiking-wise, that is).

Heading out Friday AM to start a hike Saturday at Delaware Water Gap. We'll see how far north we get by April 11. Hoping all the snow has melted!

Amtrak is convenient for me because I can get to a good amount of the trail without driving. I live just outside Huntington, WV which is a stop on the Cardinal (Chicago to NYC via a southern, looping route). It's cheaper than flying. It's true Amtrak isn't the greatest for on-time travel, but it's an easier way for me. Flying from Huntington (or Charleston, WV) is expensive.
In the past I've done sections starting at Rock Fish Gap (Staunton stop), Harpers Ferry (Washington, DC stop then Metra to HF), and Duncannon (Philadelphia then Amtrak to Harrisburg). This trip will be NYC and then bus to Delaware Water Gap (meeting my sister in NYC). Once in northern NJ and through NY, there are many close bus and commuter train back to NYC.
My son came with me once on an aborted hike - he ended up with plantar fasciitis. He doesn't like the way I travel. The post was edited 1 time, last by EdDzierzak ().

I've taken Amtrak not only on short trips but also across the country. Can't say I've enjoyed the delays but the scenery was great, especially across the Rockies during winter.

My Mom lives in Washington State and I have used Amtrak 3 times to go visit. I have gone to, or from Harpers Ferry 6 times for hikes. I prefer it to flying, no questions asked about anything in my pack. Used the Crescent and Capital Limited to get home from Springer, commuter and the Pennsylvanian to get home from High Point, NJ, etc. But, I never count on it being on time.

While I was pounding on my bag of fritos with my fist to crush them, the mrs asks "what in the world are you doing"? So I explain to her I am crushing them so they take up less space- and she answers: why don't you just use my rolling pin? Wow what a great idea- duh.
So here's what five days of food looks like for me. 9.5 pounds.

i grew up going to Dairy Queen when they had Frito pies. Small bag of those chips in a fries paper tray. Add chili to the chips. Sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese on top of that. Cost back then was 25 cents. Cheap date time.
We were sitting inside when we heard a gal in the drive through yell to her boyfriend that she was not a cheap date and therefore she wanted onions on hers so he wouldn't kiss her. We thought it was hilarious.--
